NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER FEB. 13-17
VALENTINE’S DAY- Students are able to bring valentines tomorrow to share with their classmates and their Book Buddies. We made large envelopes to place the valentines in. We will also have a special snack tomorrow.
FRACTION TOWN- All of the students turned in the Fraction Town project on Friday. I hope the students enjoyed the challenge.
MEASUREMENT BOOKLET- We are moving into measurement this week. The students will be given a Measurement Booklet today or tomorrow that needs to be completed at home by next Tuesday, February 21st.
NO SCHOOL- We do not have school on Monday, February 20th.
GEORGIA ANIMAL PROJECT- Each student picked a Georgia animal to research. We will be working on the paper AT SCHOOL! Students will gather information about their animals from the sites they learned about from Mrs. Harp and from the books they checked out from the school library. Students need to print out a COLOR picture of their animal at home. Please bring the picture to school by Wednesday.
SOS- SAVE OUR SCIENCE LAB- Many thanks to all of the families who have made a donation for our Science Lab. We have one week left in the campaign. We aren’t where we need to be yet, so please consider making a donation if you have not already. Mrs. Cauffiel does excellent hands-on activities with all of our students. Our science test scores are higher than many other elementary schools in Cobb County. I believe it is a combination of great teaching, wonderful students, family support and…our SCIENCE LAB!!!!
SCHOOL DANCE- Mark your calendars for Friday, February 24th. Our school dance will last from 6-8 on the 24th.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need to earn at least 10 AR points with 80% accuracy. The nine weeks ends on Wednesday, March 14th.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We had a big discussion today about spelling. Students will be having different lists of words. Some lists will be modified while others have challenge words. We will all practice the patterns together throughout the week The pattern this week is words that end in y./An assessment will be given on Friday.
ENGLISH- Verbs will be our focus this week
WRITING- We will be gathering information on our Georgia animals this week. We will learn how to organize our notes into an informational paper. All of the work will be completed at school./ We will also be starting cursive handwriting today!!!! Ask your child how to form a cursive a ,c, d, g, and q. Write a cursive letter in the agenda.
MATH- Measurement will be our focus this week./ We will also be reviewing area, perimeter, fractions, and decimals. As always, we will be having fish tests and a timed test on Wednesday.
SCIENCE- Georgia animal research
SOCIAL STUDIES-Mary Bethune is still our focus this week./ We will have an open book test over Mary Bethune on Friday.

SOS- Save Our Science Lab!!! Many thanks to all of the families who have made donations to our Science Lab. Ford is very fortunate to have Mrs. Cauffiel and the Science Lab. Our Science scores are much higher because of the hands-on activities that the students are able to experience. Please consider making a contribution if you haven’t already. We can only keep the Science Lab if we raise enough money. It is not funded by the county.
SCIENCE TEST- Students will be bringing home their science folders tonight to study for a Science test on Tuesday over the different regions of Georgia. Students will need to know all of the regions, their location in Georgia, and some plants and animals found in each region.
ANIMAL RESEARCH PROJECT- This morning, students chose an animal found in Georgia that they would like to research. Mrs. Harp will be doing two lessons this week showing the students how and where to locate information. In class, we will practice reading a nonfiction piece on wolves together, and I will model how to take notes on what we have read. Students do not need to start on their project yet! Please write the name of the animal you would like to research in the agenda.
CATO IN SCHOOL FIELD TRIP- CATO will be coming to our school tomorrow for a skull study.
FRACTION TOWN- Students will be bringing home information today about a math project called “Fraction Town”. I have modeled what to do in class. The project is due on Friday.
AR REWARD/ AR GOAL- Thanks to all of the parents who were able to bring the pets to school last Friday. The children enjoyed seeing their classmates’ pets Many thanks to Mrs. Runyon for bringing cookies and drinks for all of the students. The goal for the third nine weeks is 10 points again with 80% comprehension. Please make sure your child is on track to meet his/her goal.

SOS-SAVE OUR SCIENCE LAB- As a teacher at Ford, I can’t stress how valuable the Science Lab is to our curriculum. Mrs. Cauffiel does a fantastic job bringing the standards to life. She is able to do hands-on activities with the students that go along with what we are studying in the classroom. If we don’t receive the funding we need, we will no longer have a Science Lab. I believe the lab is something VERY special that Ford has that many other schools do not have. Please send in any donation that could help us SAVE OUR SCIENCE LAB. Many thanks to all of the families who have already contributed!
CURRICULUM NIGHT-THURSDAY, FEB. 2- Please join us for a great night of centers and hands-on activities. Prepaid Chic-Fil-A dinners will be served from 6:00-6:30. (Order forms were sent home last week. If you misplaced yours, let me know and I can send you another one.) Activities will run from 6:30-7:30. Students who attend Curriculum Night may exempt one homework assignment on Thursday night and they will also receive a homework pass the next morning if they show me the signed form from Curriculum Night.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART-FRIDAY, FEB. 3- Get ready for some jump roping! Please send in any donations that you have collected for the American Heart Association this Friday. Students are allowed to bring board games and water bottles on Friday also.
BIOGRAPHY BLAB- The students did a great job with Biography Blab. I really enjoyed talking to each one of them. I learned a lot!!!

MATH BUSTERS- We will be taking a Math Buster Test every Wednesday. Please help your child study and prepare for these very important timed tests.

PARENT SURVEY- Some of the students will be bringing home a parent survey today. Please complete it and return it by February 10th. Thanks for taking the time to complete the survey.
BIOGRAPHY BLAB- We will be taking notes from our biography books this week. Students will be interviewed on Friday. Students should come to school dressed as the person or bring clothes to change into on Friday. Please write the name of the person you are dressing up as in the agenda.
CURRICULUM NIGHT- Please plan to join us on Thursday, January 26 for Curriculum Night. Prepaid Chic-Fil-A dinners will be available for purchase. Pink order forms are being brought home today by the youngest and only in families. Great activities at all grade levels will be offered.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART- Lots of information was sent home two weeks ago for Jump Rope for Heart. Please plan to return any money collected on Friday, February 3rd. Students are also allowed to bring board games and cards to play while they aren’t jumping.
FISH TESTS- I am very proud of the students who have mastered their multiplication facts. I can truly tell the ones who have “learned them for life” and the ones who only learned them for a test. It is imperative that students know ALL of their facts extremely well. Math will be very difficult if the facts aren’t mastered. Please review the facts with your child on a daily basis.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need a minimum of 10 AR points with at least 80% comprehension this nine weeks.
SUBJECT MATTER

GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS- The good news is that John and I get to go on a cruise to celebrate our big 50th birthdays! The bad news is that I won’t be at school on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Donna Toner will be my substitute while I am gone. I will return any e-mails on Friday.
THANKS-Wow! It’s not so bad to turn 50 when you get spoiled! Thank you so much for the insulated lunch bag. I really needed that! My family and I will get lots of use from the wonderful gift certificates also. It was such a nice treat to have lunch and dessert delivered to me. Thank you so much!!!!!
BIOGRAPHY BOOK- Please make sure your biography book is completed by Friday, January 20. We will start discussing the note taking process on Friday.
FISH TESTS-We will continue to take fish tests on a two day rotation. The Real Deal test only needs to be signed if the student misses something.
ACCELERATED READER- Make sure to read your biography book, but don’t forget to read other books as well. Every student needs to earn a minimum of 10 AR points this nine weeks.

SPELLING- We will discuss how base words are affected when we add –ed/ An assessment will be given on Friday
ENGLISH- All of the different uses of commas will be reviewed this week./Review how to use a, an, & the/ We will begin the note taking process this week.
WRITING-We will be doing writing associated with Social Studies topics this week.
READING-We will discuss the folktale called “Borreguita and the Coyote”/ An assessment will be given on Thursday/Read biography book
MATH- Area and perimeter will continue to be discussed. I apologize for the very difficult homework paper that came home last week. We will go over it together when I return./ Various assessments will be given throughout the week over perimeter and area.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Susan B. Anthony has been a BIG topic for the past week. The girls have really gotten fired up! In the agenda, write down the year that women were allowed to vote in all states. An assessment will be given on Wednesday.

WELCOME BACK! I hope you were able to enjoy time with friends and family. I hope 2012 will be a great year for all of you.
ACCELERATED READER- I am happy to say that everyone met their AR goal this past nine weeks. Our goal for the third nine weeks is 10 points again. Please remember that this is a MINIMUM goal. Many students should be getting well above 10 points each nine weeks. Congratulations to Valerie Barnhart for earning over 115 AR points for the second nine weeks!
READING LOGS- New reading logs will be coming home today.
FISH TESTS- We will continue to take Fish Tests every day. The first day will be In Order and the second day will be Real Deal. Corrections will be DOUBLE the number missed on a Real Deal Day. That number will increase each time the same test isn’t passed.
BIOGRAPHY BOOKS- Students will be checking out a biography book from the library tomorrow. Please make sure to bring all library books to school on Tuesday.
MATH BUSTERS- We will start taking Math Buster Tests again every Wednesday. Congratulations to our newest Math Busters: Dani Appelgate, William Joyner, Saylor Runyon, and Caroline Kastensmidt!
REPORT CARDS- Report cards will be sent home on Friday.
NO SCHOOL- We will not have school next Monday, January 16th due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

CHECKPOINT TESTS- The students did a great job on the checkpoint tests last week. We took a Language Arts Benchmark Test this morning.
HOLIDAY PARTY- Please plan to join us for our holiday party on Wednesday, December 21 from 12:30-1:30. Many thanks to Mrs. Kastensmidt for getting everything together for us.
WINTER BREAK- We will be out of school from December 23rd- January 9th. Enjoy time with your friends and families.
FISH TESTS- We will be taking fish tests every day this week. We will continue with the fish tests when we return after the holidays. We will be on a two day rotation after the holidays…In Order then Real Deal.
MATH BUSTER TESTS- We will be taking the 7 minute timed tests on Wednesday and Thursday. Study and try to pass before the holidays! Write in the agenda what Math Buster Tests you still need to pass.

SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We are working on adding –ing to words that follow the VCe pattern and words that follow the VVC pattern. Our spelling homework is different this week. Students will get to choose three assignments THEY would like to do. I gave them a sheet called “Ho! Ho! Ho! Three in a Row!” They should pick one assignment each night to complete and bring to school the next day. An assessment will be given on Thursday.
ENGLISH- We will be designing the covers for our Cinderella books. We will also be writing our “About the Author” portion of the book. I will be sending home a stack of Cinderella papers to be typed by the parents who volunteered. Please return the completed typed papers after the winter break.
Reading- We will be reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever each day this week. We will be watching the video on Thursday./ Each child we be doing a fluency test with me this week./ All AR tests must be taken by 2:00 on Thursday.
MATH- We will be taking Fish Tests each day this week/ A Math Buster Test will be given on Wednesday and Thursday/ A geometry test will be given on Tuesday/ Geometry quilts are due tomorrow./ Second nine weeks assessments will be given this week on Monday and Wednesday

IOWA TEST SCORES- Students brought home their Iowa Test Scores on Thursday. Let me know if you have any questions
FISH TESTS- We are still taking fish tests every day. Please help your child study on a nightly basis. Remember to “learn them for life…not just for the test”.
CHECKPOINT TESTS- We will be taking the county Checkpoint Tests on Wednesday (Reading/Lang. Arts), Thursday(Math), and Friday(Science). We will have a different specials schedule for those three days. Students will complete the tests on paper, and then we will use IRESPOND to send our answers to the county.
HOLIDAY PARTY- We would love for everyone to join us for our holiday party on Wednesday, December 21 from 12:30-1:30. Contact Mrs. Kastensmidt if you would like to help with a station or if you would like to help with the supplies/refreshments.

READING- We will begin reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever this week./ We will also review story elements: characters, setting, plot, problem, and solution/ Review different genres and their characteristics.
MATH-Fish Tests/ Division: arrays, repeated subtraction, and fact families/ Geometry- area and perimeter/ Work on Geometry Quilts- They are due on Tuesday, December 20th. Write in your agenda the number of squares you have completed so far.
SCIENCE- We are reviewing rocks and minerals, soils, weathering and erosion.

BOOKS- I will be reading my favorite holiday book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, by Barbara Robinson. It is about a family who hears the Christmas Story for the first time. We will also be reading a story called “My Name is Maria Isabel”. It is about a little girl who is in a Winter Pageant at school. Please let me know if you have a problem with your child hearing/reading either of these stories.
ACCELERATED READER-All students need at least 10 AR points by Thursday, December 22. Students also need to have 80% or higher comprehension. Please encourage your child to meet this important goal. Hats off to Valerie Barnhart who has earned over 70 AR points so far this nine weeks! Wow!
FISH TESTS- The students are doing a GREAT job learning their multiplication facts. Please help your child review on a nightly basis. Remember…learn your facts for life…not just for a test.

MEDIA CENTER- We will be going to the media center tomorrow to get new books. Please have your library books at school tomorrow.
THANKSGIVING- I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving break. I am sorry that we weren’t able to all get together and share all of the things we are thankful for. Hopefully your child shared the special letter with you at home.
HOLILDAY SHOPPE- All of the students will have the opportunity to go to the Holiday Shoppe tomorrow during the school day. Envelopes were sent home last week. Please feel free to send money with your child tomorrow if he/she would like to do some early holiday shopping.
FISH TESTS- Please continue to help your child study for the fish tests. They need to be learning the facts for life…not just for the test!
GEOMETRY QUILT- Students were given information today on an upcoming geometry project. Examples were shown and discussed in class. The quilts are due on Tuesday, December 20th. This is a great project that needs to be worked on daily. Please don’t wait until the last minute. Do a little each day
SYMMETRICAL DRAWINGS- Please look for large pictures of faces in magazines. They must be facing forward. We need these pictures by Friday for an art project.
JINGLE JAMBOREE- Students are invited to come to the Jingle Jamboree on Saturday from 9:00-12:00.

READING- Compare and contrast Lon Po Po and other versions of Little Red Riding Hood. A comprehension quiz will be given over Lon Po Po on Friday./ Read and discuss Time For Kids
MATH- Continue discussing geometry terms. Get started on Geometry Quilts. Students may bring their math journals home each night to help with the Geometry Quilt. Just make sure to bring them back each day./ Work on sevens, eights, and nines multiplication facts this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Frederick Douglass will be our focus this week. We will also discuss the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain ranges. Which mountain range is the “young” one? Write the answer in your agenda.

CAN DRIVE- Many thanks to all of the families who sent in cans. I know the families who receive them will be very thankful.
FIFTH GRADE MUSICAL- Please come and see the Science Fair Winners and the Fifth Grade Musical on Tuesday, November 15th.
NOTEBOOK PAPER- Please ask your child if he/she needs more notebook paper. Many of the students are running low at this point in the year. Our class “stash” is almost gone.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need at least 10 AR points with at least 80% accuracy by Thursday, December 22nd. Please encourage your child to meet this goal. All students wrote a note in their agendas today showing their points and percentage.
TYPISTS NEEDED- Are you a good typist? We need your help! The students have written their own versions of Cinderella, and we would like to turn each one of them into a book. If we could get 4-5 parents, we could get them finished pretty quickly. Please let me know if you are interested. I will also need parents to bind the books once they are typed. Let me know if you are interested in that too.
NOTE CARDS NEEDED- We are using notecards to make our multiplication facts. We are running low on 3 X 5 notecards. We would appreciate any donations that you could send in.
THANKSGIVING FEAST- We are looking forward to all of you joining us on Wednesday, November 16th from 12:05-12:50 for lunch and then back to the classroom to celebrate all that we are thankful for.
THANKSGIVING BREAK- Students will be out of school from November 21-25.

SPELLING- We are working on –tch and –ch words this week. An assessment will be given on Friday.
ENGLISH- Possessive Nouns have been our focus for the past two weeks. An assessment will be given on Tuesday or Wednesday this week./ We will be making Turkey Plurals Booklets this week.
READING- We will be reading The Three Little Javelinas. A comprehension test will be given on Thursday. / We will also be reading other versions of the Three Little Pigs and comparing and contrasting them/ We will be sharing many cute Thanksgiving books./Fact and opinion will be discussed and assessed.
MATH-Learning the multiplication facts continues to be our main focus. PLEASE help your child practice every night. Learning the facts FOR LIFE is our goal. Fish tests are given every day. We will be doing some fun Thanksgiving math activities throughout the week./ We will also begin geometry this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES – The students did very well on the government and Paul Revere tests. We will begin discussing Frederick Douglass this week.

NEWSLETTER MRS.TURNER NOV. 7-11
NO SCHOOL- Students will not have school on Tuesday, November 8th due to Election Day. Please ask your child who can vote. Write how old you have to be to vote in the agenda.
CANNED FOOD DRIVE- Please bring in canned or boxed food for needy families. Many students have already made great contributions!!!! Ford would like to collect 5,000 cans.
TURKEY TALES CELEBRATION- Please join us on Wednesday, November 16th from 12:05-12:50 for the Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria followed by a classroom presentation at 1:00. Families will exit the cafeteria and walk through the gardens and around the back of the school to get back to the classroom.
SCIENCE FAIR ENTRIES- All science fair entries are due on Tuesday, November 15th.
FIFTH GRADE MUSICAL- The fifth graders will be presenting their musical on Tuesday, November 15th. Science Fair winners will be announced at 5:45 that night.
TARGET- Target students will meet on Friday this week instead of Thursday.
THANKSGIVING BREAK- Students will not have school from November 21-25.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will be working on –dge and –ge sounds this week. The assessment will be given on THURSDAY this week.
ENGLISH- Students did a great job on the Plurals Projects. This week we will be working on possessives. / DOL quizzes
READING- We will be reading various versions of the Three Little Pigs and comparing and contrasting the different versions. / We will also be discussing what we are thankful for.
MATH- MULTIPLICATION FACTS are still our main focus!!!!!! Please help your child study on a nightly basis. They need to learn the facts for LIFE…not just for a test. Real Deal tests must be signed and corrected.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Students will have a test over the three branches of government on Wednesday. A folder and study guide should be coming home to use to study. A test over Paul Revere will be given on Thursday.

HALLOWEEN- I hope you have a safe and happy Halloween. The only homework is to list 15 items that come in threes…example-tennis balls
CONFERENCE WEEK- Thank you for a very successful conference week. I hope you felt like the information was valuable. You have wonderful children. I feel very blessed to be able to work with them every day.
PLURALS PROJECT- Students are bringing home information about a Plurals Project that is due this Friday. Examples have been shared in class. We will be having a big plurals test on Friday.
ACCELERATED READER- Students have a 10 point goal this nine weeks with 80% accuracy.
BINGO NIGHT- Come and take part in a night of fun on Friday, November 4th from 6-8.
STUDENT HOLIDAY- Students will not have school on Tuesday, November 8th.
THANKSGIVING FEAST- Please plan to join us on Wednesday, November 15th for our annual Thanksgiving Feast. The lunch will be from 12:00-12:50. The portion in our classroom will start after lunch…~1:00. Please write “yes” or “no” in the agenda as to whether you plan to attend the classroom portion.

SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING-We will be working on words that end with –ce, -ve, and –se. An assessment will be given on Friday
ENGLISH- Our Plurals Project will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday. Students should be prepared to share their project with the class. An assessment will be given on Thursday and on Friday. Students have MANY plurals sheets to use to study.
READING/WRITING- We will be learning how to write a response to literature this week. We will be reading Stephanie’s Ponytail and The Kissing Hand. We will also be doing an oral reading of “Play Ball Cinderella”. We will be comparing and contrasting various genres: biography, fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry, etc. We will practice reading nonfiction text with our Time For Kids magazines.
MATH-The fish tests are in full swing! We are now on a three day rotation. Students who passed the Real Deal Twos will move on to the Threes tables. Students who have not passed the Twos will stay on the Twos. Students should be able to say the table in order VERY QUICKLY before they should start studying them mixed up. Do some practice fish tests at home. Thanks for devoting lots of time to this very important task. Everything we do from now on depends on knowing the multiplication facts very well. Assessments are given daily!!!!
SOCIAL STUDIES- We are discussing Paul Revere.
SCIENCE- We did a Science Olympiad event today. Ask your child how his/her team did

CONFERENCE WEEK- Students will be dismissed at 12:15 each day this week. I am looking forward to meeting with everyone this week.
BOOK FAIR- We previewed the Book Fair on Friday. Students are welcome to make purchases any morning before 7:45 and any afternoon. Please come and check out the Book Fair.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH- Our community outreach this year is to donate 12 unsharpened pencils to less fortunate students. Please send those in this week if you are able.
RED RIBBON WEEK- We are celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week. Each day is a different topic. Today was “Crazy Hair Day” / Tuesday is “Crazy Sock Day”/ Wednesday is “Favorite Team Shirt Day”/ Thursday is PJ Day/and Friday is “Wear Red Day”. Many thanks to Mrs. Kastensmidt for decorating our wall…”We Put A Cap On Drugs” …great idea!
REFELECTIONS RECEPTION- Most of the students in our class participated in the literature portion of the Reflections Contest. They received an invitation to the Reflections Reception this Wednesday, October 26 at Durham Middle School starting at 6:30. Congratulations to Caroline Kastensmidt for coming in second place!!!!!
MULTIPLICATION FISH TESTS- An orange sheet of paper came home last week explaining the Multiplication Fish Tests. I will go over it again at our conference. Please make sure to help your child study his/her multiplication facts on a nightly basis. The fish tests officially start this week!
THANKSGIVING FEAST/ CLASSROOM VISIT- Another orange sheet of paper came home last week advertising the Thanksgiving Feast on Wednesday, November 16th from 12:05-12:50. We are inviting the parents to come back to our classroom after the feast to hear some very important writings from the students. That should last for ~45 minutes.
CLEMSON FOOTBALL- We are 8 and 0! Sorry…I just had to write that If you read this, write the name of your favorite college team in the agenda.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- Consonant blends are our focus this week. An assessment will be given on Friday.
ENGLISH- We will be discussing all of the ways to make words plural/ A mini-assessment will be given each day on the pattern we discuss at school.
WRITING- We have watched and read many different versions of Cinderella. We have been discussing the story elements that go along with each. Students will be writing their own version of Cinderella this week. As your child about Bubba, the Cowboy Prince…very funny book!!!!
READING- We will be comparing and contrasting various versions of Cinderella and discussing story elements associated with fairy tales. This is a great week to earn AR points since we get out of school early every day.
MATH- Multiplication will be our focus this week. The fish tests start today. Please help your child study!
SOCIAL STUDIES- Paul Revere is our person of interest. Students were given directions on how to access the books online.

POP AND READ/ AR- I think the students enjoyed Pop and Read. I hope it helped them get off to a great start for the second nine weeks. Many thanks to Mrs. Runyon for providing pops and snacks for the students who met their AR goals! The goal for the second nine weeks is 10 points with at least 80% accuracy.
CONFERENCE WEEK- Students will be dismissed at 12:15 each day next week. I am looking forward to meeting with everyone.
STANDARDIZED TESTING- Many thanks to all of the people who sent in food, drinks, and surprises throughout testing. The students worked hard. I hope the results will show their effort. We have two more county Benchmark tests that we have to take this week. The Math Benchmark test will be given on Tuesday and the Language Arts Benchmark test will be given on Wednesday. These tests will show if the students have mastered the standards we have covered so far in Math and Language Arts.
SCIENCE FAIR- Please encourage your child to enter the science fair. Participation forms are due this Friday, Oct. 21. Projects are to be completed at home. Science Fair projects are due on Tuesday, November 15th.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will be working on homophones this week. Please help your child study for the test on Friday.
ENGLISH- The Benchmark test will be given on Wednesday./ We will be working on capitalization and abbreviations / DOL quizzes will be given this week also./ A new DOL packet has been placed in our morning work folders. The first nine weeks DOL packet is being sent home today.
WRITING- Response to Literature will be our writing focus this nine weeks. A prewriting will be completed on Friday.
READING- We will be studying story elements-characters , setting, plot, etc. We will be comparing and contrasting various versions of Cinderella this week.
MATH- We will be taking the Benchmark test on Tuesday. Multiplication fish test letters will be coming home today. We will begin the fish tests next week. We will be taking a break from our Math Buster tests after this Wednesday. Please write in the agenda which timed Math Buster Test your child needs to be studying for this week. An assessment will be given on Friday over estimation problem solving.
SCIENCE- We will be completing activities on rocks and minerals.

CATO- We will be going to CATO Nature Center tomorrow. It is supposed to be a beautiful day, but cool in the morning. We WILL be outside so make sure to dress in layers. Bring a sack lunch and drink if you did not order one from school. Mrs. Perkins, our Earth Parent, will be our chaperone.
VULCAN ROCK QUARRY- We had a neat field trip to the Vulcan Rock Quarry. The students were able to see how the rock is mined. They also received a hard hat, info book, and as many rocks as they could fit in their bags! Mrs. Gibson got lots of cool pictures.
SCIENCE NIGHT- Please join us tomorrow night for a great night of hands-on science experiments! The activities start at 6:00 in the gym and cafeteria. Any student who comes from our class and completes at least 5 experiments, will be exempt from all homework Tuesday night. Make sure you bring your form to school on Wednesday to prove that you were there. You will also receive a homework pass for future use. I will be working at the pulley station. Come see me
STANDARDIZED TESTING- We will begin taking the Cognitive Abilities Test on Wednesday. Students need to bring their own snacks this week. We will have a SPECIAL snack schedule next week for the ITBS test. A letter was sent home last week with assigned days and items. Students should get to bed early and eat a good breakfast each morning during testing.
CONFERENCE WEEK- We will be having conferences after school the week of Oct. 24-28. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 each day that week.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need 9 AR points by the end of the nine week period. We only have two weeks left to meet that goal. Please encourage your child to meet his/her AR goal.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION- Please continue to send in Box Tops to help our school earn money.
REFLECTIONS CONTEST- All students are working on a literature piece for the Reflections contest at school. Students are encouraged to try another category at home.

FIELD TRIP ON FRIDAY- We will be going to the Vulcan Rock Quarry this Friday. One parent can go with us. You will probably have to drive your own car or ride with parents from other third grade classes. I don’t think there will be enough room on the buses. If you would like to be considered, please write a note in your child’s agenda. I will write down all of the names I receive and pick one from the hat. Students will need to wear tennis shoes and a red shirt. Listen to the weather that morning to see if you will need a jacket. Students will also need to bring a sack lunch and a drink if they aren’t buying a sack lunch from the cafeteria. We will be leaving at 9:15 and returning at 1:30.
CLASSROOM HELPERS- Many thanks to the following parents who have stepped up to help us this year:
Room parent-Jen Kastensmidt, Reading parent- Jo Runyon, Earth Parent- Melanie Perkins, and Class photographer-Chrissy Gibson. As far as I know, we still need a parent for HOSPITALITY and a parent for CHIC-FIL-A. If you can help out with either of these, please let me know.
SCIENCE LAB NEEDS- Mrs. Cauffiel needs some pencils with latex-free erasers,
SPOOKTACULAR- Thanks for sending in cans to help with the scarecrow. We will be decorating Snow White’s poisoned apple tomorrow. Please plan to join us this Saturday from 4:00-8:00 for a great time.
REFLECTIONS- The theme this year is “Diversity means…” Reflections is a great program! It encourages children to show their creative sides. All of the students in our class will be completing a LITERATURE piece for the competition at school. A permission form will be coming home this week. I would like to encourage the children to enter other categories as well: visual arts, photography, film production, dance choreography and music composition. All entries are due by October 10th to the front office. Details can be found in the packet that was sent home last week.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION- Continue to save and send in those Box Tops. The contest continues through Oct. 21.
ACCELERATED READER- The students are making great progress toward their goal of 9 points for the first nine weeks. Remember to read books that are ON YOUR LEVEL. You don’t want to pick books that are too hard or too easy.
PICTURE RETAKES- Thursday, Sept. 29th
STANDARDIZED TESTING-We will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills from Wednesday, Oct. 5- Friday, Oct. 14th. A special snack schedule will be coming home for the week of the Iowa Test.
SCIENCE NIGHT- Plan to join us on Tuesday, Oct. 4th from 6:00-8:00 for a great night of hands-on science experiments!
CATO FIELD TRIP- We will be visiting the CATO house on Tuesday, Oct. 4th for our second CATO field trip. The earth parent will be our chaperone for this field trip. If she is unable to go, I will send out an e-mail.
THANK YOU LETTERS TO THE TROOPS- Ford is joining The Bert Show to let our troops know how much they are appreciated. Ford families and students are asked to write letters to our troops. The letters need to be ready to send by Oct. 28th. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts: DO use regular size paper or smaller paper. DO use crayons, pencils, or markers. DO use thank you words not political opinions. Some ideas for writing are: thank you for serving our country, leaving family, away from home, appreciate your hard work and dedication, etc. DON’T use cardboard, glue, tape, staples, or glitter. DO NOT SEND photos, donations, envelopes, or stamps. Thanks for taking the time to read this! Please write the words: THANK YOU SOLDIERS in the agenda if you read all of this. Students will receive a Rachel’s Challenge link for every letter written by the child and his family.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- Our patterns for this week are: oi, oy, ou, and ow. Please study the words throughout the week. Many of the patterns sound alike, so the words have to be memorized. An assessment will be given on Friday.
ENGLISH/WRITING- We will continue discussing subjects and predicates/ Writing- Our descriptive writings should be finished by the end of this week. We will be typing our color poems in the computer lab. Reflections entries will be worked on at school. Letters to the soldiers will also be worked on at school.
READING- We will be using Time For Kids to discuss nonfiction texts. We will also be discussing elements of a variety of genres. What does fiction vs. nonfiction look like? An assessment over basic elements will be given on Thursday. We get to meet our Book Buddies from Mrs. Edwards’s class this week!!!!
MATH- Time and money, addition and subtraction, and input/ output will be our topics this week. A timed test will be given on Wednesday.
SOCIAL STUDIES-We will continue our discussion of the three branches of government.
HEALTH- We watched a power point today on ways to keep our bodies healthy. Please be aware of the snacks your children are bringing to school each day. We want to encourage healthy choices

OPEN HOUSE- Many thanks to all of the parents who were able to come to Open House last Thursday. I hope the information was helpful.
BINGO NIGHT- Please join us this Friday for our first Bingo Night! It lasts from 6-8.
SPOOKTACULAR-The PTSA will be sponsoring a fall Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4:00-8:00. Each class is being asked to make a scarecrow and a pumpkin to sell at the event. We are making a scarecrow out of cans. Please send in cans all this week. Make sure to take off the label, clean out the can, and drill a hole in the end of the can. Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Kastensmidt will be working on this project. We have some ideas for the pumpkin, too.
STANDARDIZED TESTING- Please mark your calendars for Oct. 5-14. We will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills during that time. Please don’t make any appointments during the morning hours during that time.
SRI- Students took the SRI reading test in the computer lab on Friday. It is a great tool for determining the child’s reading level. Your child’s information will be coming home today. It will show your child’s level, and it will give suggestions for appropriate books. Please remember, this is only one assessment.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need to earn 9 AR points by the end of the first nine weeks. Please choose books that are appropriate for YOUR reading level. You should not be reading level 1 books if you are able to read on the third grade level. Our goal is to score 80% or higher on each book.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- This week we will be working on are, ire, ore, ure, air, & ear sounds. An assessment will be given on Friday. Many of the words this week are homophones. Those are words that sound alike but are spelled differently. fare-fair, stare-stair, etc. Please study early in the week. These can be tricky. If you read this, please write the word homophone in the agenda.
ENGLISH- Subjects and predicates will be introduced this week.
WRITING- We will be working on descriptive paragraphs this week. Students need to brainstorm some of their favorite places and be ready to write about them.
READING- Author’s Purpose will be our focus this week. An assessment will be given on Wednesday. Nonfiction Text features will also be discussed. Read every night to try and reach the AR goal of 9 points.
MATH- Addition and subtraction will be practiced and discussed this week. Please review regrouping with your children at home. A timed test will be given on Wednesday.
SOCIAL STUDIES- The three levels and three branches of government will be discussed this week. We will also be reviewing map skills.

LA ISLA- Many thanks to all of the families who sent in items for our ISLA celebration last Friday. The students enjoyed tasting the fruits from the island. They also designed very colorful fish like the illustrator.
FUNDRAISER- Students will be bringing home information today about our new fundraiser.
OPEN HOUSE- Please plan to join us for Open House this Thursday at 6:00. The PTSA meeting will be in the cafeteria. Parents will be dismissed to the classrooms after the meeting. Keep your fingers crossed that our Smartboard will be up and working by then!!!
AR- Please continue to encourage your child to read on a nightly basis. All students need to earn at least 9 points by the end of the first nine weeks. Reading logs are due every Monday. Minutes and signatures should be recorded on the log each week. Remember, students should be reading at least 4 out of 7 nights each week for at least 15 minutes…more would be appreciated
MEDIA CENTER- Be prepared to go to the Media Center on Wednesday. Students will be able to return and check out books.
STANDARDIZED TESTING- Please mark your calendars for October 5-14. We will start taking the Cognitive Abilities Test on Wednesday the 5th followed by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills starting on Monday the 10th.

ENGLISH- We will continue discussing the 4 types of sentences, common and proper nouns, and capitalization. An assessment will be given on Friday. Organization of friendly letters will also be discussed.
READING- We are still reading Skinnybones. Hopefully we will be finished by the end of the week. Students will take the AR test when we are finished. We will be using our Social Studies books for nonfiction reading. We will also be reading Georgia Schools Weekly newspapers.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Greece has been our focus for the past two weeks. We are reviewing Monday and Tuesday this week. Students will have an assessment over the Greek influence (Olympics, Government, Architecture, & Location) on the United States on Wednesday. All students have a yellow folder to use for studying.
MATH-We will continue discussing rounding and estimating. An assessment will be given on Tuesday over rounding and estimating. We will begin discussing the properties of addition on Wednesday. A timed test will also be given on Wednesday.

CLOTHING FOR THE WEEK- Students should have worn orange today. Tomorrow, students should wear green. On Thursday, they should wear their favorite color. On Friday, all students should wear tropical clothing.
CATO- We had our first CATO field trip today. It was called “Under Your Feet”. Please ask your child what he/she learned today.
OPEN HOUSE- Please mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 15th from 6:00-7:30. Open House will start with a meeting in the gym. Parents will be dismissed to the classrooms after the PTSA meeting.
ACCELERATED READER- All students need to earn at least 9 AR points this nine weeks. I have written the number of AR points your child has earned so far in the agenda. We are starting the fourth week of school so make sure your child is reading every night and taking AR tests at school. There are plenty of times throughout the day to take AR tests and to go to the media center. If your child is having trouble with either of these, let me know and I will make sure to suggest a good time to take a test or to go to the media center. I can also help your child with a book choice if that is a problem.

ENGLISH- Types of sentences and common and proper nouns will be our focus this week.
READING-Skinnybones – comprehension questions will be asked after each chapter we read- A final noel test will be given on Friday/ How I Spent My Summer Vacation- Writing assignments will coincide with both books
MATH- Placed value will still be our main focus. We will also discuss Benchmark numbers./ A 7 minute timed test will be given every Wednesday. Please help your child prepare with flashcards, timed sites on the blog, computer games, etc.
SOCIAL STUDIES- We will culminate our map skills with a test on Tuesday. Students will be bringing home a study guide today. (Monday) We will begin our study of Greece and how it helped shape the United States.

E-MAIL- Test e-mails were sent out to all families. If you ever send me an e-mail and I don’t respond within 24 hours, that means I didn’t get it. Try again or write me a note in your child’s agenda. Many of our e-mails tend to go to the spam folder.
THANKS- Parents, thank you so much for getting all of the forms turned in so quickly. We are still missing a few Performing Arts permission envelopes. They were located in the Cobb County Folders that were sent home last week. Please return the envelope as soon as you can.
PARENT LETTERS-Many thanks to all of the parents who have had the opportunity to write a letter to me about your child. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please do so. It is very helpful to get insight from you.
SCHOOL PICTURES-Individual pictures will be taken on Tuesday, August 30th.
AGENDAS-The children did a great job catching on to everything this week. Please remember NOT to take any papers out of the Return to School side of the binder….even if they look like they are finished or have already been checked. We will go through our binders every Friday and move any necessary papers to the Keep at Home side. Please DO clean out the Keep at Home side on a daily basis.
OPEN HOUSE-Open House will be on Thursday, Sept. 15 starting at 6:00 in the gym for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.
FIELD TRIPS-We have some EXCELLENT field trip opportunities coming up for our third grade students. We will be sending home some information soon.
MEDIA CENTER AND ACCELERATED READER-Students will be able to check out library books on Monday after we have our orientation. All students need to have at least 9 AR points this first nine weeks. Get started early!
READING LOGS-Reading logs should be turned in every Monday. Students must read at least 15 minutes, 4 out of 7 nights.

SPELLING- We will begin our first sort involving words with long vowel sounds. Students will have spelling homework throughout the week. An assessment will be given on Friday.

EVENING IN THE GARDEN- A bright yellow permission form was sent home Friday for Evening in the Garden. If your child would like to play a musical instrument and/or participate in the program, please return the form ASAP. Please write your child’s name on the form. A new order form will be coming home today for dinners from Great Harvest Bread Co. Mrs. Beale needs some parents to help her paint props for Evening in the Garden. If you can help, please write me a note in your child’s agenda, and I will let Mrs. Beale know. Evening in the Garden will be on Monday, May 2nd.
SPRING FLING- I was busy making cotton candy! Many thanks to Mrs. Kriebel and all of the families who contributed to the class basket. Oscar and Elizabeth Kriebel won the kickball raffle. They will be two of eight students who will be competing against the third grade teachers in a kickball game on Wednesday afternoon!
VOLUNTEER TEA- We have been very lucky to have so many parent helpers this year. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 27th from 9:00-10:00. Join us for food and fellowship.

CRCT- Students will start taking the CRCT the Tuesday we return from spring break. Reading will be given on Tuesday, April 12; English on Wednesday, April 13; Math on Thursday, April 14; Science on Friday, April 15; and Social Studies on Monday, April 18.
CRCT SNACK SCHEDULE- Students brought home a CRCT snack schedule last week. It is written on a bright orange piece of paper. Please note your date and item. We have 21 students and 2 teachers. Please prepare your snack so that it can be easily handed out. Thanks so much! The students look forward to the snacks and surprises!
CRCT ONLINE PRACTICE- We have practiced taking the online CRCT tests in the computer lab. Please have your child try some at home also. They all have a special number. The password is education.
#2 PENCILS- All students will need a couple of number two pencils…not mechanical for the CRCT test.
SPRING BREAK- Students will not have school April 4-8.
LETTERS FOR LINKS- Our class has done a GREAT job writing letters to friends and family! We won a whipped cream party for all of the letters we’ve written so far. Please encourage your child to write to a friend or relative. Send in a stamped envelope, and we will mail it from school.

LAST NINE WEEKS- I can’t believe how quickly this year is passing. The last nine week period started today! Wow!
CRCT- Only 11 more school days until the CRCT! Students will be taking the CRCT from Tuesday, April 12- Monday, April 18. All third grade students must pass the reading section of the test to be promoted to fourth grade. Please be aware that the reading test will be the first one given on Tuesday, April 12. A snack schedule will be coming home next week outlining who needs to bring what.
ACCELERATED READER- We will be having an AR celebration for all students who met their AR goal for the 3rd nine weeks. This Thursday will be “Electronics Day” and “Pop and Read”. Students may bring any hand held electronic game or any kind of board game. They can also bring a drink and special snack. All students need 10 AR points by Friday, May 20th for the fourth nine weeks. Keep in mind that media center books will have to be turned in about 2 weeks prior to the end of the year. Get started early earning your AR points. The “P” Party will be held on Monday, May 23rd. Students who have met their AR goals (number of points and percentage correct) EVERY nine weeks will be invited to the “P” Party.
SPRING BREAK- Students will not have school April 4-8. Keep in mind that the CRCT starts the Tuesday after we return from spring break.
MEDIA CENTER- We will be going to the media center tomorrow to get some great books to start the 4th nine week period. Please bring all library books to school tomorrow.

REPORT CARDS- Report cards will be sent home this Thursday. Please sign the signature card and return it in the UNsealed envelope. Keep the report card at home.
REGISTRATION CARDS- All students are bringing home a large envelope today with a registration card inside. Please add THREE stamps and return the registration card in the envelope ASAP.
CRCT PRACTICE TESTS- Please take some of the online CRCT practice tests to get familiar with the CRCT format. An information sheet was sent home last week with your child’s number and password.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Franklin D. Roosevelt will continue to be our topic of discussion. Students should start studying for the test that will be given on Wednesday. All students should have very good notes covering the info in the book. We will begin our discussion of Eleanor Roosevelt this week also.
SCIENCE- What do we see in our backyards? Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, and plants? Students are being asked to write down what they see and hear in their backyards, and then they should sketch a picture of their backyard. Please help your child with specific names of trees and flowers in your yard. Write the name of a tree in the agenda. We will also continue discussing the 5 regions of Georgia. An assessment will be given on Thursday over the 5 different regions of Georgia. Students should be able to tell me at least 2 plants and 2 animals found in each region. They also need to tell me some specific information from each region. If your child studies and reviews the booklets we made in class, he/she will do great on the assessment!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! The students had fun handing out their Valentines and reading the cute messages. They especially liked all of the treats! Many thanks to the parents who sent in the special Valentine’s Day snack.
MEDIA CENTER/ AR- We will be checking out books in the media center on Thursday. Make sure you have all of your library books with you that day. Remember, all students need 10 AR points by March 18th. The winter break will be a great time to catch up on reading if you are behind.
XTRA ACTIVITY THIS THURSDAY- We will be watching a special movie this Thursday for Xtra Activity. I will provide the popcorn. Students may bring a drink from home.
PJ DAY THIS FRIDAY- Relay for Life is asking students to bring $1.00 on Friday in order to wear PJ’s. Please support this great cause
DR. DEPEW- Dr. Depew came and talked to all of the third grade students on Friday about proper dental care and the anatomy of the teeth. He did a great smart board presentation for the students and he gave each third grade student a bag of goodies.
WINTER BREAK- Students will not have school next week.
COBB COUNTY CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR- Please go online and fill out the survey for your calendar of choice. Voice your opinion as to which calendar you would like for next year. In the agenda, write a 1, 2, or 3 showing your preference.

ENGLISH- We will be correcting some cumulative assessments. We will also be writing thank you letters to Dr. Depew.
WRITING- Our main focus this week will be our Georgia animal research. I graded the papers all weekend and made suggestions and provided corrections. This week the students will edit and rewrite their papers. We will share the papers this week also.
READING- One on one reading with Mrs. Turner. I will be listening to each individual child for fluency, tone, expression, and comprehension./ Time For Kids/ Buckle Down-prefixes and suffixes
CURSIVE- We will start learning cursive handwriting this week: I, t, u, w, e, l, b, and h. Students should not try to write in cursive until we have learned all of the letters…lower case and upper case. They will form bad cursive habits if they try the letters before they have been given proper instruction.
MATH- An assessment over decimals will be given today. We will be reviewing area and perimeter. We will introduce fractional parts of a set. No fish tests will be given this week. A seven minute timed test will be given on Wednesday.

SCIENCE NIGHT- Please plan to attend Science Night tomorrow night from 6:30-8:00 in the gym. We have a wonderful Science Lab here at Ford. We want to keep the lab! ABSENT- I will be absent Tuesday and Wednesday. Nancy Koontz will be my substitute. I will be in Athens with Allison while she has surgery on her broken arm.
BIOGRAPHY BLAB- We discussed how Biography Blab will work. I gave the students a sheet that needs to be signed tonight. Ms. Koontz will check for signatures tomorrow and then the sheet is yours to keep. We discussed how to take notes today, and we set up our note cards. They will have time tomorrow and Wednesday for note taking also. Please practice the interview with your child at home. We WILL have Biography Blab on Thursday, January 27th. Please write the name of the person your child read about in the agenda.
MEDIA CENTER/RESEARCH-The students will be having two research lessons with Mrs. Harp this week. The lessons will help us get started on our Georgia animal research project. We will also be going to the computer lab this week to get started on our research.
BEHAVIOR- Our class is usually the best in the school. Unfortunately, they got in trouble for talking too much in Science Lab on Friday and in Art today. There has also been some name-calling in the cafeteria. Please talk to your child about appropriate behavior. I expect to get a wonderful note from Ms. Koontz when I return.
AR- Students need to earn 10 AR points this nine weeks. We are starting the third week of this nine week period. I’m not sure how the snow week is being counted, so it might actually be the fourth week. Make sure you are reading and earning AR points.

SNOW BREAK- It sounds like everyone had a lot of fun during our snow break! Time to get back to work
MAKE UP DATE- If you haven’t heard yet, 4 days were already built into the calendar, so we only have to make up one day. That day will be made up on Friday, March 18th. It was originally a teacher workday. Now the students will be coming to school that day.
BIOGRAPHY BOOKS- I was hoping that all of the students used their week off to finish their biography books. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. All biography books must be finished by this Sunday. We will start taking notes on Monday, January 24th. Biography Blab will be on Thursday, January 27th. Students need to have their biography books at school every day this week and next week. It would be a great idea to reread the book again if time permits. Please start planning what you would like to wear the day of the talk show. You can dress as the person or a relative of the person.
ACCELERATED READER- Students need 10 AR points again this nine weeks. Even though I am requiring the biography book, students still need to be reading other books and earning points. I am not sure how the calendar will be adjusted for the missed days. Be prepared to have 10 AR points by Friday, March 18th.
MULTIPLICATION ICE CREAM SUNDAE CELEBRATION- All of the students have worked very hard to learn their multiplication facts. We will be having an ice cream sundae celebration this Thursday. Students earn “items” for their sundaes for each table they have passed. 0=bowl, 1= spoon, 2=vanilla ice cream, 3=chocolate ice cream, 4=bananas, 5=hot fudge, 6=M & M’s, 7=gummie bears, 8=whipped cream, 9= cherry, 10 = sprinkles. Many thanks to all of the parents for sending in items. I think we still need a few items and some volunteers to help scoop ice cream on Thursday. Please let Beth Kriebel know if you can help serve or send in an item.
BIRTHDAY- Thanks for making my birthday so special! I received beautiful flowers and a great salad and drink from Buffalo’s. The children made cards and offered gifts and well wishes all day. They said I should get a homework pass too because it’s my birthday. They thought Dr. Frost should grade my papers for me!!!!Ha! Do you see why I love your kids so much?!
BINGO- Please plan to come to BINGO NIGHT this Friday. It’s always lots of fun and it supports Relay for Life.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will have an assessment over Sort #18 this Thursday. Remember, this is a short week, so start studying early. / We are discussing how to add “ed” to the end of words.
ENGLISH- Subjects and predicates will be our main focus this week.
READING- Nonfiction is our focus this nine weeks. We are currently reading biography books. We will also be reading a story called “Wolves”. We will practice reading and taking notes. We will also start learning how to use Destiny for research. We did a lesson in the computer lab today, and we will also be having research lessons with Mrs. Harp in the media center.
MATH- We reviewed area and perimeter. Ask your child the formula for area. Please write it in the agenda. Fractions will be our focus for the remainder of the week. We are still taking Fish Tests every day…some were rusty today…uh oh! Remember, “Learn them for life, not just for the test!” A 7 minute timed test will be given on THURSDAY instead of Wednesday. Please help your child prepare. There are some great sites on the blog that your child can access to practice.

THANKS!- I used my class money to buy some blue topaz earrings, necklace, and ring. I love them! I will think of this very special group every time I wear them.
GEOMETRY QUILTS- The geometry quilts were fantastic! I could tell that lots of hard work and effort went in to completing those. Our quilt winners were: FIRST PLACE- Averi Visage and Elli McElhannon, SECOND PLACE- Isabel Stroth, THIRD PLACE- Mason Babay and FOURTH PLACE- Elizabeth Kriebel and Amanda McCullough. Congratulations to EVERYONE for a job well done
CATO IN SCHOOL FIELD TRIP- We will have a skull study tomorrow with our friends from CATO.
REPORT CARDS- I will be sending home report cards on Friday. Please keep the report card and AR report at home. Sign the signature card and return it in the unsealed envelope.
ACCELERATED READER- Once again, students will need to earn 10 AR points for the 3rd nine weeks. Please go over the AR report from second nine weeks with your child. We are half way through the third grade year, therefore, students should be reading books that are 3.5 or higher. (Of course, every child is an individual and different scenarios apply to every child) Notice the average book level of your child’s choices of books. Also notice the % correct. It needs to be 80% or higher./ New reading logs will be coming home today.
MEDIA CENTER- We will be going to the media center on Thursday. Everyone needs to be able to check out a book that day. Make sure you have your library books with you on Thursday.

7 MINUTE TIMED TEST- Students will have the opportunity to take a 7 minute timed test on Tuesday and again on Thursday. They should be easier now that the students know their multiplication facts. Please help your child prepare.
AR- Students who have met the AR goal for this nine weeks will get to participate in a special celebration on Thursday with Mrs. McElhannon. Students technically have until Friday afternoon to get the 10 AR points. Students are writing the current number of points in their agendas today. Please encourage your child if she/he has not met the goal yet.

CHECKPOINT TESTS- The students took the reading section of the Checkpoint Test this morning. Tomorrow we will be taking the math section and on Wednesday, we will be taking the science section.
ACCELERATED READER- Students have two more weeks to reach their 10 point AR goal. They also need to have 80% or higher on comprehension. The last day to take an AR test for this nine week period is Friday, December 17th. Please ask your child how he/she is doing.
THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER- I will be reading my favorite book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, to the students for the next two weeks. It is about a family and the Christmas story. Please contact me if you have any questions about the content. We will also be doing Language Arts activities to accompany the book.
HOLIDAY PARTY- Our class party will be on Friday, December 17 from 12:00-1:00. Everyone is welcome to come. Please contact Beth Kriebel if you would like to help.
FISH TESTS- Congratulations to the following students who earned a free dinner for learning all of their multiplication facts: Oscar Kriebel, Elizabeth Kriebel, Elizabeth Thompson, Caroline Morris, John Fritts, Phillip Surratt, Connor Slade, Kaitlyn Ketch, Patrick Stotler, and Elli McElhannon. GEOMETRY QUILT- Students are bringing home a green sheet of paper today with instructions for the geometry quilt. The first task is to buy a white sheet of poster board and divide it into 25 equal sections. Please do that as soon as possible. Students should work on a couple of squares EACH night. The completed quilt is due on Thursday, December 16th.
FISH TESTS- We are continuing to work very hard on our multiplication facts. We will start learning division tomorrow. Students who do not know their multiplication facts will struggle with division and everything we do from now on. Please review multiplication facts on a nightly basis. Write which multiplication table your child will be taking tomorrow in the parent signature section of the agenda.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE-Please send in canned foods for the less fortunate. We will have a collection box in our classroom all week.
TURKEY TALE CELEBRATION- We are very excited about sharing our “Turkey Tales” with the parents. Please come to our classroom at 11:05 on Wednesday, November 17th. We have one chair per family. If more than one family member is coming, you might want to bring a folding chair Parents are also invited to eat a wonderful Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria from 12:10-12:55. Adult lunches cost $2.50.
THANKSGIVING BREAK- Students will not have school from Monday, November 22- Friday, November 26. Enjoy time with your friends and family.

BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN- The students did a great job running on Friday. They brought home collection envelopes that need to be returned by this Thursday. Thanks so much for supporting the Science Lab!
CATO FIELD TRIP- We will be going on a field trip to the CATO Nature Center this Wednesday. Some students ordered a sack lunch from school. If your child did not order a sack lunch from school, please send one from home. ALL students can bring a soda. Dress appropriately for the weather. We will be outside for part of the field trip. Our Earth Parent will be our chaperone for the field trip.
ACCELERATED READER- We are almost half way through the second nine weeks. Students must earn 10 AR points this time with 80% comprehension. I will be sending home a printout of scores and percentages tomorrow. Please encourage your child to read every night
MULTIPLICATION FISH TESTS- The students are working very hard on their multiplication facts. Thanks so much for all of the extra practice and encouragement at home. Keep up the great work!

HALLOWEEN- I hope everyone had fun trick or treating! Please don’t bring your candy to school for a snack; save that for home Many thanks to the following parents who sent in items for our special snack and for Pumpkinology: Mrs. Kriebel, Mrs. Slade, Mrs. Babay, Mrs. Ketch, Mrs. Champion, and Mrs. Morris. We always appreciated your support
MORNING WORK- As students enter the room each morning, they should unpack their backpacks, copy HW from the board(usually about 3 short homework assignments or reminders), check in with me, and complete ONE PAGE out of the morning work folder. Many of the students are not completing their morning work or they are leaving it at home. I discussed this with the children because it is becoming a BIG problem. All students have at least 25 minutes to finish all of the things I mentioned from the time announcements start until we go to specials at 8:15. So even if they don’t ride an early bus, they have ample time to complete morning work. Also, we don’t check it until the next day…so if a student does not have time to complete it for some reason, they can take it home to finish. Some are taking it home, but forgetting to bring it back. We have decided that students who do not have morning work completed and ready to check will receive TWO X’s in the agenda. Please discuss this important issue with your child.
NO SCHOOL- Students do not have school on Tuesday because of Election Day.
BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN- Please continue to collect pledges for the Boosterthon Fun Run! We want to raise enough money to keep our Science Lab. Students have earned enough pledges for EXTRA RECESS TODAY, PJ DAY ON WEDNESDAY, and NO HOMEWORK ON THURSDAY. The fun run will be on Thursday at 11:15. Please come out and cheer on the children! The children should bring a good snack for Thursday because we will be eating lunch later than usual. If you read this, please write “good snack” in the agenda section.
TURKEY TALE CELEBRATION- Students will be bringing home a paper today giving information about the Turkey Tale Celebration and the feast in the cafeteria. I will list the date and times here also: Wednesday, November 17th from 11:05-12:05 Turkey Tale Celebration in the classroom. 12:10-12:55 Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria. We hope you can join us for both!

TESTING- We have completed our standardized testing. The children worked very hard. Thanks for sending in all of the snacks and surprises.
AR/ POP AND READ- All of the students met their AR goals for the first nine weeks! Yay! For the second nine weeks, students will need 10 AR points with 80% accuracy. Please get started early. We will have a Pop and Read on Wednesday to help the students get off to a great start this nine weeks.
REFLECTIONS- Congratulations to Caroline Morris and Elli McElhannon for doing a great job in the Reflections contest. An awards ceremony will be held on Thursday night at Durham starting at 7:00.
YEARBOOK- Congratulations to Amanda McCullough! Her artwork will be on the back cover of the yearbook.
SPIRIT DAY- Our class earned the most money for Relay For Life last Friday. We had our picture taken and we get popsicles today. If you read this, please write “popsickle” in the agenda.
BOOK FAIR- Students will be able to preview the Book Fair on Friday. The Book Fair will be open every morning and afternoon during conference week.

FALL BREAK- I hope you and your families had a wonderful break. Now it’s time to get back into the routine and work hard
STANDARDIZED TESTING- We will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test Wednesday through Friday. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills will be given each day next week. Homework will be minimal this week and next due to testing. Please get to bed early each night and eat a good breakfast. All students need a couple of number 2 pencils with good erasers. They can not use mechanical pencils on the test.
CATO FIELD TRIP- We had our first in-school CATO field trip today. Please ask your child about the three types of soil that were discussed and the adaptations of earthworms.
DEPEW ORTHODONTICS- We are fortunate to have Depew Orthodontics as a partner for our class. They will be coming in once a month to do a health lesson with the children. Tomorrow will be their first visit.
MYSTERY READER- Many thanks to Mrs. Keeton and Mr. Kriebel for coming in to be our Mystery Reader.
ACCELERATED READER- Continue to read and earn AR points. All students need at least 8 AR points with 80% accuracy by Friday, October 8th. Many students are earning their points, but their comprehension level is not where it needs to be. Make sure to read your books carefully!
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will be discussing “aw”, “au”, “al”, and “ou”. We will still have a spelling assessment on Thursday even though we are doing standardized testing.
READING- Idioms will be the topic of discussion this week. We will be reading Who Let the Car Out of the Bag and There’s A Frog in My Throat. Please write what the following idiom means in the signature section of the agenda…”Don’t be a backseat driver.” Read and discuss Time For Kids. Discuss how to read and interpret different types of graphs.
ENGLISH- Dictionary usage and guide words will be discussed this week. We will also discuss how to use a thesaurus.
WRITING- Students will begin writing personal narratives this week. We will go over their compare and contrast papers and discuss the strengths and weaknesses.
MATH- Subtraction with regrouping will be our main focus this week. We will also be discussing elapsed time and input/output. A timed test will be given on Wednesday.
SCIENCE- We have lots of parents coming in to help us with a hands-on science experiment tomorrow. It will help us to understand the differences in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks.

FALL BREAK- Students will not have school from Sept. 20-24th.
POP AND READ- The students have earned a Pop and Read during Language Arts on Wednesday. Students can bring blankets, sleeping bags, and pillows to lie on. They can also bring snacks and drinks. (please don’t send any red or purple drinks…only light colors) They should also bring AR BOOKS to read! Hopefully students who are behind on their AR points can get caught up during Pop and Read and over Fall Break. Remember, all students need 8 AR points by Friday, October 8th.
STANDARDIZED TESTING- All third grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test from Wednesday, Sept. 29-Friday, Oct. 1. Then, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills will be given from Monday, Oct.4-Friday, Oct. 8. A green sheet will be coming home today with all of the information.
MEDIA CENTER-We will be going to the media center to get new books on Thursday. Remember to bring your library books that day! Of course, students can go to the library any morning.
ABSENT- I will not be here on Friday because of my class reunion in Tennessee. Ms. Koontz will be the substitute. I will not have access to e-mail during Fall Break.
PARENT HELPERS NEEDED-I need six parent helpers on Tuesday, Sept. 28th from 1-2 for a science experiment on rocks and minerals. The directions are easy to follow. Please let me know if you can come in and help. I will send home the info. ahead of time so you will have an idea of what to say and do

GREECE- Many thanks to Mrs. Kriebel for coming in and sharing her knowledge of Greece with us. She had some wonderful information and pictures to share with the children. They also got to taste olives!
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING-We are working on are,air, ire, ore, ure, and ear. Many of these are difficult to remember, so study early in the week! An assessment will be given on Thursday.
ENGLISH/WRITING- Personal narratives and friendly letters will be our focus this week. We will also learn how to compare and contrast in our writing.
READING-We will be introducing traditional literature this week and the elements found in traditional literature. We will be working on comparing and contrasting between various versions of traditional tales. / Lon Po Po and The Three Little Javelinas will be two of the stories we will be reading this week. Comprehension quizzes will be given over both./ We will read and discuss Georgia News Weekly.
MATH- A 7 minute timed test will be given tomorrow. Please ask your child what test he/she will be taking and help him/her practice for the test./ Rounding and estimating will be reviewed this week. We will also be discussing properties of addition: commutative, associative, and identity. An assessment over rounding and properties will be given this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Ancient and Modern Olympics have been our topics of discussion. We have also discussed the three main types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Ask your child to describe them to you. If you read this, write the name of the very fancy, intricate kind of column in the signature portion of the agenda. Direct democracy and representative democracy will be introduced today. We will fill out a study guide together. Please help your child study for an assessment over the Olympics and roots of our democracy on Thursday.

ISLA- Many thanks to all of the parents who sent in items for our ISLA Xtra activity. The children enjoyed tasting the fruits from the island.
OPEN HOUSE- Please plan to join us on Tuesday (K,2,4) or Thursday (1,3,5) at 6:30 in the gym. There will be a short PTSA meeting, and then parents will be dismissed to the classrooms. Useful information will be shared that night. Please try to come.
CLASSROOM DIRECTORY-Mrs. Kriebel is working on a class directory for us. If you haven’t been receiving e-mails from her, please let me know.
LABOR DAY- No school on Monday, Sept. 6th.
FALL BREAK- No school the week of Sept. 20-24.
ACCELERATED READER- All students in our class need to be reading AR books and taking AR tests. Our goal for the first nine weeks is 8 points. Please ask your child how many points he/she has so far and continue to offer encouragement towards the goal. Remember, all third grade students must pass the reading section of the CRCT in the spring. The more students read, the more confident they are at test time.8 points is a MINIMUM…we would love to see more points!!!
FIRST IN MATH- Your child has a card and information written in his/her agenda about how to get onto First In Math. It is a wonderful math program on the computer. Students can earn “stickers” for our school and for themselves for trying First In Math. Please write your child’s password in the signature portion of the agenda if you read this
ONLINE MATH BOOK- Many thanks to Mrs. Fritts (John’s mom) for entering each child’s information for online math books. Your child will have the information with them today in their agenda. The students will go ahead and bring their math books home today…test it and see if you can find the same page on line. If it works, your child does not need to bring the math book home when we have homework out of it…much lighter back packs!!!

EARLY RELEASE DAY- Students will be dismissed at 12:15 on Wednesday, August 25th.
TROPICAL CLOTHING- Wear tropical clothing this Thursday for Xtra Activity. We will be tasting tropical fruits from LA ISLA and doing a neat art project.
MYSTERY READER- Many thanks to Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Davis for being our first two mystery readers.
CLASSROOM HELPERS AND MYSTERY READERS- Many thanks to Mrs. Davis for volunteering to make our class calendar. Classroom helpers and mystery readers for the month of August have been sent out already. Let me know if you did not receive a calendar. Mrs. McElhannon has volunteered to call and remind Mystery Readers the weekend before you come in on Monday.

MATH- The relative size of digits will be discussed this week. We will also introduce estimating and rounding. The seven minute timed test will be given on Wednesday. Please help your child prepare for this test. If you read this, please write the name of the test your child will be taking on Wednesday…eg.addition, subtraction, or multiplication.
SOCIAL STUDIES-Students will be labeling and discussing the seven continents and five oceans…parents, did you know about the Southern Ocean? We will also be practicing “Our Place in Space”. Students should be able to say their place in space orally to me by Thursday. They should also be able to label the continents and oceans on a world map.

MRS. TURNER NEWSLETTER AUG. 16-20
WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE- I am looking forward to a great year together. The students seem to be excited about learning.
THANKS- We are fully stocked with paper towels, tissues, wipes, soap, and index cards. Most of the students have had the opportunity to get their binders and notebook paper, too. We have even received candy and treats for the goody drawers. Please feel free to send wrapped candy or other treats for the drawer. Thanks so much for your generosity!
FORMS- Everyone did a GREAT job filling out and returning forms. Everything has been taken up and accounted for. I appreciate how quickly everything was returned. That makes my job a lot easier.
BLOG- I will post a weekly newsletter on the blog every Monday. Please read over it for special dates and activities. I might ask you to write something specific in your child’s agenda to see if you really read the blog
PICTURE DAY- Students will have fall pictures (in August!!!!) on Thursday, August 19th. Forms were sent home on Friday. Please return the form with payment on Thursday. A $10 late fee will be charged to anyone who turns in the form late. (Pictures are optional.)
EARLY RELEASE- Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 25th. Students will be dismissed at 12:15.

AGENDAS AND BINDERS- Please sign your child’s agenda every night. Do not take anything out of the Return to School side of the binder. Feel free to take items out of the Keep At Home side on a daily basis. We will clean out binders every Thursday and move items from Return to School to Keep at Home. X’s will be written in the agenda when students forget homework or have inappropriate behavior. Two X’s each week are o.k. If students receive more than two X’s, they will miss X-tra activity on Thursday. We will start with a clean slate every Friday. Our week will run from Friday to Thursday because some students have Target on Friday.
READING LOG- Students need to read at least 4 nights a week for at least 15 minutes. Of course, more minutes would be great!!! Please record minutes on the orange reading log. Students should be prepared to show completed reading logs every Monday.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will be working on long vowel sounds again this week: ai, oa, ea, ee, ui, and oo. Remember…”When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Students will be given an assessment on Thursday.
ENGLISH- We will continue discussing the four types of sentences. An assessment will be given on Tuesday. Students will be doing a morning work packet every day. Assessments will be given over the material as we complete and check the packet. Nouns will be introduced at the end of the week.
WRITING- Descriptive writing will be our focus this week. We will write descriptive paragraphs about ourselves and we will write color poems. Students need to wear ORANGE on Tuesday and GREEN on Wednesday to help us with the color poems.
READING- Patricia Polacco will be our author focus as we read Appelemando’s Dreams. AR is not up and running yet, but students should still be reading on a nightly basis. I’ll let you know when we can start taking tests. We will adjust our AR goal according to when we can actually start taking tests.
MATH- Place value will continue to be our focus in math. Students should be prepared for 7 minute timed tests every Wednesday.
SOCIAL STUDIES- We will be learning about latitude and longitude this week. An assessment will be given on Thursday. We will begin learning about “My Place in Space.”

BRICK- Thank you so much for purchasing a brick for me. That is VERY special! I will be able to bring my grandkids(yikes) back to see it! I love the saying…”We must teach our kids to dream with their eyes open”…and especially…”Go Clemson”!!!!!

EVENING IN THE GARDEN- Our wonderful celebration has been moved to Thursday starting with the ribbon cutting ceremony for the “Seeds of Hope” garden at 4:30. Please plan to join us for dinner on the lawn and singing on the blacktop. Children’s artwork and poetry will be displayed. Children will also be playing instruments throughout the gardens.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- Calling all of our wonderful mothers! Join us this Friday from 9:15-10:15 in our classroom.

FIELD DAY- Next Tuesday, our class will be participating in Field Day. Students should wear a blue shirt and bring a water bottle with his/her name on it. Mrs. Tam has volunteered to send in popsicles for the class. Please apply sunscreen before coming to school that morning.

JEOPARDY- We will be reviewing all of the standards we have covered this year by playing Jeopardy. Students will be making Jeopardy cards all week. We will start playing next week. Students are welcome to bring their books home to study any night!

ACCELERATED READER- Students may NOT check books out from the Ford Media Center any longer. Books that are already checked out are due this Friday, May 7th. SECRETARY’S DAY- Tomorrow is Secretary’s Day. Please let the office staff know how much you appreciate them.

EARTH DAY- Please wear green or blue for Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd. The whole day will involve Earth Day activities.

PIE DAY- Thank you so much for your willingness to send in an ingredient for Pie Day. Please send the ingredient on or before Friday, April 23rd. The Pie Day Challenge Questions are due on Thursday, April 22nd. Pie Day is one of my favorite days of the year. I can’t wait!!!

CRCT- Testing will start on Wednesday with Reading being the first test. Thursday=Language Arts, Friday=Math, Monday= Science and Tuesday= Social Studies. A special snack schedule was sent home on Thursday. Please mark your day on the calendar. Let me know if you need another copy.
Things to remember:
-get to school on time
-have AR books to read during testing
- minimal homework during testing
-no spelling test for the next two weeks
-need at least two, #2 pencils with good erasers (no mechanical pencils)
-get to bed early
-eat a good breakfast

ACCELERATED READER- Students need 10 AR points by Monday, May 17. Please look at your child’s agenda for the number of points earned so far. This is a great week to catch up on reading since we won’t be having homework.

LIBRARY BOOK CHECKOUT/RETURN- April 30th is the last day students may check out a library book from the school. All student books are due on May 7th.

HISTORICAL UNDERSTANDINGS- Students were given a sheet today with a brief outline of the famous Americans that we have studied throughout the year. This is a WONDERFUL sheet to review before the Social Studies CRCT on Tuesday of next week.

FIRST IN MATH- Keep trying this computer program and let us know what you think.

FORD SPIRIT DANCE- Enjoy some time away from testing! Come to the dance this Saturday from 6-8 at Lost Mountain Middle School..

SPRING FLING- Thanks to all of the families who came out and supported our Spring Fling!

PERFORMING ARTS- Our class will be attending the Junie B. Jones performance at the Cobb Civic Center today.

CATO FIELD TRIP- We will be visiting the CATO Nature Center tomorrow. Please have your child bring a sack lunch and drink. Wear old tennis shoes, long pants, and a jacket. It’s going to be muddy from the rain we have had. Mrs. Watkins and Mr. Gilreath will be our chaperones.

ACCELERATED READER- Please check your child’s agenda for the number of AR points accumulated so far this nine weeks. All students need 10 AR points by Monday, May 17th.

PRINCIPAL’S CHALLENGE- 10 students in our class have passed the Principal’s DIVISION challenge. Yeah!!! Students who were unable to pass this past Friday, should be prepared to take the test again this week. Remember, students can practice nightly on the blog.

NEW MATH COMUTER PROGRAM- We are testing a new math computer program. A yellow index card will be sent home with your child later this week. Have your child try the site and give me some feedback. We are trying to decide if we should purchase this program for the school.

IRESPOND- We tried using our new IRESPOND remotes and the children really enjoyed it. We will continue to use them to help us review for the CRCT.

TELLUS MUSEUM FIELD TRIP- We will be going on our field trip this Thursday. Students who did not raise their hands for a school lunch, will need to bring a sack lunch and a drink. ST. PATRICK’S DAY TREAT- Students will have a special St. Patrick’s Day treat tomorrow instead of Wednesday because of our busy schedule on Wednesday. Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered to bring in a treat.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND- Good luck to Elena Gray as she competes in Odyssey of the Mind this weekend at Harrison High School.

SAD NEWS- My mother-in-law, Julia Davis, passed away Thursday night. We will be traveling to South Carolina for visitation and the funeral. Donna Toner will be my sub on Monday.

EARLY RELEASE DAY- Students will be dismissed at 12:10 on Wednesday, March 10th. Lunch will be from 10:18-10:48 that day. We will see a performing arts program instead of going to specials.

ACCELERATED READER- The last day to earn AR points for the third nine weeks is Thursday, March 11th.

POP AND READ-We will kick off the new nine weeks with a Pop and Read on Friday, March 12. Students may bring blankets, sleeping bags, drinks, and snacks. Of course they will need to bring lots of good books to read, too!

TELLUS MUSEUM- First, I would like to thank all of the very generous people who stepped up when we needed more funds for the field trip. All third grade students are able to go now. SNOW DAY/PRESIDENT’S DAY- Kevin and I had a great time building snowmen and walking through the neighborhood in the snow. I hope you had lots of fun too!!!

VALENTINE’S DAY- Thank you so much for the beautiful pink roses and the adorable umbrella. You all spoil me!!!

ICE CREAM PARTY/ FISH TESTS- All of the students have worked very hard to pass all of the multiplication facts through the twelves tables. In celebration of their hard work, we will have an ice cream party on Friday. An item was earned each time the students passed at test. Many thanks to all of the parents who have said they will send in items for our celebration! Continue to review the multiplication facts even though we won’t be taking fish tests on a daily basis any more. At random times, I will announce a fish test, so students always need to be ready

100 PROBLEM, 7 MINUTE TIMED TEST- We will take a timed test every Wednesday. Please prepare for the test you plan to take.

VALENTINE BOX- Students should decorate a shoe box at home this week and bring it to school on Friday. If students choose to hand out Valentines, they must include everyone in our class A list was sent home last week. We will hand out and read our Valentines during morning work on Friday.

SPECIAL TREAT- Students will have a special Valentine Treat on Friday so you won’t need a snack that day.

BOOK BUDDIES-On Friday, we will be visiting with our Book Buddies. You might want to make a Valentine for your Book Buddy.

COMPUTER LAB- We will be going to the computer lab tomorrow to gather information on our Georgia animal. Our time has been changed to 9:00-10:00.

READING AND MATH COMPACTING- Mrs. Pepper has asked us to provide some extra time for reading and math so all of the students can feel confident and ready to do a super job on the CRCT in April. As of today, students will be going to various third grade teachers for an hour to work on skills needed to do well on the CRCT.

NO SCHOOL- Schools will be closed on Monday, February 15th.

PICTURES ON THURSDAY- We will have our class picture taken on Thursday. Students may also order individual pictures.

GEORGIA ANIMAL- Students can be gathering information about their animal at home. They should NOT be working on a report. We will be doing that at school. There is no specific due date. Just gather information and bring it to school.

CATO INDOOR FIELDTRIP- We will be having our CATO indoor fieldtrip tomorrow at 9:00.

SCHOOL WIDE TORNADO DRILL – We have discussed the proper duck and cover position and the correct location if we should ever have a tornado while at school.

VALENTINE BOX- At home, please decorate a shoebox to hold your Valentines. You can do it however you wish! Bring the decorated box to school on Friday, February 12th. If you choose to hand out Valentines, please include every child in our class. A class list will be sent home later this week. BINGO NIGHT- Come and have some fun on Friday night from 6:30-8:00. Please look at the website for more info.

DANCING WITH THE GEORGIA STARS- The Durham Middle School Band is sponsoring a neat event on Saturday at Allatoona High School. It is called “Dancing With the Georgia Stars”. Teachers and elected officials from the Acworth area will be paired with dance instructors in the area. They will compete in a fun-filled competition. Let me know if you would like more info.

CONFERENCE WEEK- Thanks so much for coming to your child’s conference last week. It is always valuable to discuss how your child is doing. Please send in the survey forms ASAP.

I’m back! Thanks for all of the well wishes for my mother. Her surgery went well and she is on the mend.

CONFERENCE WEEK- Our specials time this week is 8:15-8:50 and our brunch time this week is 10:18-10:48. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 every day. I’m looking forward to meeting with everyone.

SIGNED PAPERS- We have been doing lots of pretesting and evaluating, so that’s why you haven’t received many graded papers lately. I’ll share all the info.at conferences.

SEVEN MINUTE TIMED TEST- We will resume our 100 problem, 7 minute timed tests after conference week. Please help your child start studying for next week. I will let you know what your child needs to study when we meet this week.

LUNCHROOM BEHAVIOR- I was very disappointed in the lunchroom behavior today. A child brought cupcakes to share for his birthday. Almost half of the students in our class smeared them all over their faces or crammed them in their mouths in one bite. Please talk to your child about appropriate behavior and expectations in the lunchroom. If you read this, please draw a cupcake in the signature portion of the agenda.

WELCOME BACK! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I spent a lot of my time being a nurse for Kevin. I’m very happy to say that both of his surgeries went very well and he is doing great!

MISSING GLUE BOTTLES- Did anyone happen to pick up some glue bottles after the holiday party? We are missing about 6 bottles of glue.

ACCELERATED READER- All students met their goals again for the second nine weeks! Yeah!!! Grace Tam had 106 points for the nine week period…WOW! The goal for the third nine weeks will be 10 points again. Get started early!

“P” PARTY- I am very excited about the “P” Party. I played Rock Band with Allison and Kevin over the holidays and I loved it!!! I can’t wait to play some more Rock Band and other games!!

BUCKLE DOWN- We will be taking the Buckle Down math and reading pretests this week. Buckle Down is a wonderful program that helps students prepare for the CRCT.

NO SCHOOL- Monday, January 18th is the Martin Luther King holiday.

CONFERENCE WEEK- Conference forms will be coming home on January 11th or possibly earlier. Please indicate a new time if the one I suggested will not work for you. I am trying to do the conferences mainly on Tuesday, Jan. 26th, Wednesday, Jan. 27th, and Thursday, January 28th. Let me know in your child’s agenda if you have a preference for a certain day. Remember, Biogrpahy Blab is tomorrow(Tuesday). Students should come to school dressed as the person they read about. Note cards can be used to practice with at home, but they may NOT be used on the talk show set. Biography books need to be turned in to the media center tomorrow.

BIOGRAPHY BLAB- Students will be bringing home a sheet today that explains how we are going to be doing the Biography “book report”. I will be discussing everything with the students in class today so they should have a good idea of how it will work next Wed., Dec. 16th.

ACCELERATED READER-Students need 10 AR points by Friday, Dec. 18th. Please encourage your child to meet this very important goal. The more they read and the more practice tests they take, the more comfortable they will be when it is time for the CRCT.
Look for the number of points your child currently has in his/her agenda.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER- I would like to read this book to the students. It is my all time favorite! It has references to the Christmas story. If anyone has any objections to this being read to your child, please let me know.

FISH TEST WINNERS- Congratulations to the following students who have passed all of the way through the TENS tables: Kenzie Bonham, Asheigh Ketch, Michael Kriebel, Chandler Ruddell, Grace Tam, Davis Tyler, Julianne White, and Sarah Yokley!!!! They will be treated to a free dinner with Mrs. Turner.

FISH TESTS CONTINUE- Keep studying those facts. We will continue taking fish tests on a daily basis until the Christmas Holidays. Remember, students should NOT be counting on their fingers. They should be memorizing their facts. It takes LOTS of practice at home. Please help and encourage your child with this very important task each night.

BENCHMARK TESTS- Students will be required to take the County Language Arts Benchmark Test on Wednesday. They will be taking the County Math Benchmark Test on Friday. We have been doing practice tests at school to prepare for the county tests.

TURKEY TALES AND THANKSGIVING FEAST- Many thanks to all of the parents who were able to spend time with us and to listen to our stories. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their friends and families.

GEOMETRY QUILT- Students were given instructions today for their Geometry Quilts. We went over the terms together and I shared examples of the finished product. A grading rubric can be found on the other side of the instructions. All students will need a white piece of posterboard. Parents may help the student measure and draw the 25 boxes. The remainder of the project should be completed by the student. Quilts are due on Wednesday, December 16th.

BIOGRAPHY BOOK- Students should be reading their biography book. It should be finished by this Friday. If time permits, students should reread their books. Next week, we will be discussing note taking in nonfiction text. I will give more explanation for the biography book report next week.

TIMED MULTIPLICATION TESTS- We are still taking a timed test every day. Please help your child practice his/her multiplication facts EVERY night. Remember, we aren’t just learning them for the test, we are learning them for life!!!

IOWA TEST OF BASIC SKILLS- The results were sent home the Friday that we got out for Thanksgiving. Let me know if you have any questions about your child’s scores.

READING AT HOME- As we all know, all third grade students must pass the reading section of the CRCT in order to move up to fourth grade. Now is the time to really focus on reading different types of reading material. When you are cooking, ask your child questions about the recipe. As you read the newspaper at night, show your child an editorial and ask the author’s purpose. Have your child read a magazine article and have him/her summarize it for you. As always, have your child read at least 15 minutes every night…sometimes silently, sometimes to an adult or sibling. The more they read, the more comfortable they will be when the test is given.

THANKSGIVING FEAST AND TURKEY TALE CELEBRATION- Please join us on Wednesday, November 18th for our Thanksgiving feast in the cafeteria starting at 12:05. ACCELERATED READER- The students are doing a great job earning AR points this nine weeks. Many have already surpassed the 10 point goal, and we are only half way through the nine week period. If you don’t have 10 points yet, please work hard to reach the goal.

FISH TESTS- We are still taking a timed math test EVERY day! What we do at school is not enough. The students need LOTS of reinforcement at home in order to master the facts. Remember, these multiplication facts are the foundation for everything we will be doing in math for the remainder of the year. Students should be practicing their facts every night. Don’t just learn the facts for the test, learn them for life!

BIOGRAPHY BOOK REPORTS- Each child will check out a biography book today. I will approve it for the correct level and number of pages. Students should read the book in the next two weeks. (This week and the week after Thanksgiving) I will give them instructions for how they will write their book reports after we get back from the holiday break.

We will also have a Turkey Tale Celebration in our classroom that day following the feast. Students will be sharing special stories that they have written. It should take about one hour. We would love to have all of our parents come and celebrate with us!

CINDERELLA STORIES- Students will be bringing home their Cinderella stories tonight. As a parent, please help your child proofread for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization mistakes. Do not change the child’s ideas Also, lines need to be drawn every time students want to end a page. Parents have volunteered to type the stories for us. I will be meeting with them to explain how the typing will be done, but all of the editing needs to be completed first.

CALLING ALL TYPISTS- The students are writing Cinderella stories. We will be needing some parents to type up their stories when they are finished. If you are willing to take some of the stories home to type, please let me know. We should be finished by the end of the week. I”ll let you know when we will actually need your services

REPORT CARDS- Report cards were sent home on Friday. I am pleased with the progress the students are making. Areas of weakness that I’ve noticed in general= writing- adding details, editing, having a strong beginning, middle, and ending. Keeping a writing journal/diary at home encourages writing on a daily basis. Also, some students need to work on fluency, speed, and accuracy in their oral reading. The reading log minutes look great. Please have some of those minutes reflect oral reading with a parent. Thanks so much for all of the extra help that you provide at home!

THE FISH TESTS ARE COMING!!!! I talked with the children today about the fish tests. I am also sending home a letter that needs to be signed. The main goal is for all of the students to learn their multiplication facts. The dinner is a BONUS for the ones who are able to master the tens tables FIRST

BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN- We had our pep rally today for the Boosterthon Fun Run. Mrs. Belmonte and our Science Lab are wonderful!!! In order to keep her and the lab, we must raise more money. Please encourage friends, relatives, and neighbors to contribute to this wonderful cause

CATO FIELD TRIP- Hopefully the rain will stop and we will have a nice OUTDOOR fieldtrip tomorrow. Listen to the weather and dress appropriately. It will be very muddy after today’s rain, so be sure to wear old tennis shoes. The instructor said there were lots of mosquitoes out. Put on some bug repellent before you come to school. Even if your child ordered a school sack lunch, he/she can still bring a drink. We will be leaving about 9:00 and return about 1:30. The students learned about earthworms at our last indoor field trip.

MEDIA CENTER/ ACCELERATED READER- We went to the media center today to get new books for the new nine weeks. Our goal for the second nine weeks is 10 points. Please get started early. Don’t wait until the last minute to earn your points…it gives me grey hair! HA! HA! Mrs. Vollbracht and Mrs. Maggio brought donuts, drinks, and a surprise to all of the students today for meeting their AR goal the first nine weeks. Way to go!!!!

Congratulations to our class for earning 10 silver spoons in the cafeteria for excellent behavior! When we set our goal, the students voted on a Pop and Read for their reward. TESTING- We are continuing with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills all week. Many thanks to all of the people who have sent in snacks, drinks, and surprises. The children really look forward to the special snacks. Homework will be minimal again this week due to testing.

MYSTERY READER- Thanks to Mrs. Maggio for being our Mystery Reader today. The children were having a great time listening to the book about Jay Leno and Skinnybones.

SPECIAL SPEAKER- We would also like to thank Mrs. Kriebel for sharing her expertise and pictures of Greece. The students did GREAT on the assessment over ancient Greece.

ACCELERATED READER- Please continue to monitor and encourage your child’s reading. Remember the deadline for reaching the 8 point goal is Oct. 7th. At this age, many students need guidance and a “push” from their parents and teacher to reach the goal. Remember, all third grade students must pass the reading section of the CRCT. The more they practice, the more comfortable they will be at test time. They have to complete the entire test independently. This is different from the way the second grade test was given.

100 PROBLEM TIMED TEST- We will take the 7 minute timed test this Wednesday. Please help your child practice with flash cards, computer games, or self-made tests.

SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We are continuing our discussion of “r” influenced vowels: are, ire, ore, ure, air, & ear. The students need to initial and cut out their words tonight. Students will have a tic-tac-toe board to choose from for homework for the rest of this week. An assessment will be given on Friday.

ENGLISH/WRITING- We will be writing about our favorite place this week. We will be using a graphic organizer to arrange our thoughts and ideas. Then we will write a paragraph about our favorite place.

READING- Our discussion this week will focus on making predictions when we read. We will also discuss other text features. Author’s purpose will be discussed as well…PIE…P= Persuade I=Inform and E= Entertain.

MATH- How to read and make bar graphs and picto graphs. Students should find examples of bar graphs and picto(picture) graphs in newspapers, magazines, or on the computer. They should bring them to school to share by Friday.

OPEN HOUSE- Thanks so much to all of the parents who were able to come to Open House. Hopefully the information I shared was helpful. I forgot to mention two VERY important things: Second Grade vs. Third Grade…Third grade is more independent. As far as testing goes, in second grade, the standardized tests were read TO the students and the answers were marked IN the test booklets. In third grade, the students must read the entire test BY THEMSELVES, and they have to use a SEPARATE answer document for their answers. It makes quite a difference, so I wanted you to be aware. The second important item I forgot to mention was…MULTIPLICATION FACTS. To help your child master the facts, have him practice and learn them IN ORDER first, one table at a time. After your child can say them in order…not just the answers, but the entire fact, then start mixing them up. Students should start memorizing the facts NOW even though we aren’t studying multiplication yet.

ACCELERATED READER- Remember, our goal is for every student to get at least 8 AR points this first nine weeks. The nine week period ends on October 7th. Many students are going to need lots of encouragement and a friendly push from their parents to reach this goal every nine weeks. I have seen notes written in the agendas reminding students to take certain AR tests…excellent idea!!!! Remind your child to finish one book before starting another. Every student should have a chapter book at school to read every day.

STANDARDIZED TESTING- We will start the Cognitive Abilities Test tomorrow and continue through Friday. Students will be bringing in snacks to share during testing, so students will not need to bring their own snack the rest of this week or next week. Please refer to the orange schedule that was sent home last week for your day and item. I will have students write a reminder in their agendas the day before they are supposed to bring the snack. We will be taking the IOWA Test of Basic Skills next week. Students need to have at least two #2 pencils with good erasers. They can not use mechanical pencils. Please get to bed on time. Homework will be minimal this week and next due to testing.

PICTURE DAY- We will be taking individual pictures on Thursday, August 27th. Order forms were sent home last week.

STANDARDIZED TESTING- Please mark your calendars with the following dates: Wednesday, September 10-Friday, September 18. We will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills every day during that time.

OPEN HOUSE- The Open House for third grade will be on Thursday, September 3rd. The meeting will start in the gym at 6:30 and then parents will be dismissed to the classrooms. I hope everyone can make it. I will be sharing lots of information about our classroom, grading procedures, curriculum, discipline, etc.

FIELD TRIPS- We are having 5 different field trips associated with Cobb County Parks and Recreation. Three are here at school and two are at CATO Nature Center. The cost of the five filed trips will be ~$30. We would like to survey the parents at Open House to see if you would also like for your children to go to the Tellus Museum or if you think what we already have scheduled is enough. Think about it and then we’ll talk at Open House.

READING LOGS- Remember, all students should be reading at least 4 out of 7 nights every week for at least 15 minutes each time. Reading logs will be checked every Monday.

MULTIPLICATION- I gave each student a multiplication card. Please STRONGLY encourage your child to start memorizing the multiplication facts NOW! They are the base of much of what we will be doing in the future.

GRADED PAPERS- A stack of stapled papers will be coming home tomorrow. Please sign EVERY page. Students should correct any missed answers and write any misspelled word FIVE times each. Thanks for your help

WELCOME- I am looking forward to a great year with all of my new students. As Mrs. Pepper said, “We Expect Success from all of our students.” We will work hard and play hard to achieve our goals!

COMMUNICATION- I will be writing a newsletter every Monday and posting it on my blog. You can get to it by going to the Ford website, then click on third grade teachers, then click on Mrs. Turner. I am sending home a hard copy today, but in the future it will only be online unless you request a paper copy. Please write a note in your child’s agenda if you would like a paper copy each week. The newsletter will have lots of important dates and reminders. It will give an overview of what we are studying for the week. Please take the time to look at it each week. I will also communicate through the agenda. Please read over your child’s agenda each night and sign at the bottom. Papers on the “Return to School” side should remain in the notebook all week. Papers on the “Keep at Home” side can be taken out on a daily basis. I will be calling parents also when necessary.

OPEN HOUSE- Please make plans to attend Open House on Tuesday, September 1st. We will be going over classroom procedures, expectations, communication, new report cards and grading system, and curriculum.

UPCOMING DATES- The Cognitive Abilities Test will be given from Wednesday, September 9-11. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills will be given from Monday, September 14-18. Please don’t schedule any appointments during those dates.

SUPPLIES- Thanks so much for all of the donations of paper towels, tissues, soap, and index cards. All of the children seem to have all of the folders, notebooks, and pencils needed. Parents did a GREAT job filling out and returning all forms also. I really appreciate your help with all of that.

VOLUNTEERS- We are very fortunate to have lots of parent volunteers this year. Lisa Vollbracht and Heidi Maggio are going to be our co room moms. Vonda Palmer has volunteered to make our class directory. Kristie Ketch will be coordinating our Mystery Readers. We will also get a parent classroom helper schedule out soon. We have had parents sign up to head all of our committees. I truly appreciate your help. I couldn’t do it without you!!!! Do I have a parent volunteer who would like to come in some day this week and set up our class e-mail on the computer?

SPELLING- Our new program is called “Words Their Way”. We will be working on the Consonant/ Vowel/ Consonant/E pattern this week. A formal assessment will be given on Friday.

ENGLISH- Our first topic will be simple and compound subjects. An assessment will be given midway through the week.

READING- We will be discussing how to find books, take care of books, and take notes from books. Students are expected to read at least 4 out of 7 nights every week for at least 15 minutes each time. Of course MORE reading would be encouraged. That’s just the MINIMUM requirement. Reading logs are due every Monday.

MATH- Our first unit will begin with place value: how to read and write numbers. An assessment will be given on Friday over all of the topics covered this week. A 7 minute 0-5 multiplication test will be given on Wednesday. Basic facts should be reviewed and practiced OFTEN.

TESTING- I feel like the students did well on the CRCT tests. If they get an “E” for Effort, then they will all do great! Today was the last day…yay! Thanks for all of the wonderful snacks and surprises during testing!

NORMAL SCHEDULE- After today, we will be back on a normal schedule. We will also start having some homework again and agendas need to be signed every night.

TWIN DAY- Students will need to dress like their “twin” book buddy on Wednesday. They should also bring a candy bar, salty snack, and drink for their book buddy. A form will be coming home today with the information filled out on it. Remember, bring in items for book buddy on Wednesday!!!

ABSENT- I will be missing a few days of school because my son, Kevin, is having surgery. Jill Batchelder will be my sub for all of the days I’m out.

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER APRIL 20-24

CRCT- It’s time! The CRCT starts tomorrow! Please get to bed early every night this week. Bring some #2 pencils with good erasers…no mechanical pencils. Snacks will be provided every day during testing. Please check the schedule to see when you are supposed to bring a snack for the class. (21 of each item…19 students and 2 teachers)
Homework will be minimal due to testing. Please continue to read and earn AR points this week.

CRCT SCHEDULE- Tuesday-Reading, Wednesday- English, Thursday-Math, Friday-Science, and next Monday- Social Studies. We will be testing each morning for ~2 hours. No parents are allowed in the classrooms during this time.

CRCT EXTRA MATH PRACTICE- Today- Measurement, Tuesday- Fractions and Decimals, Wednesday- Problem Solving again. Please send a note if you want your child to stay. Send an extra snack. Please pick your child up at 3:30.

MRS. PEPPER’S BIRTHDAY- Mrs. Pepper turns 60 on Thursday, April 30th. Please feel free to make a special card for her.

EVENING IN THE GARDEN- Bright yellow forms were sent home asking who would like to participate in the musical for Evening in the Garden on Monday, May 4th. Please return those forms ASAP. Forms were also sent home for artwork that can be purchased at Evening in the Garden.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- Calling all moms! Please plan to attend our Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday, May 8th from 8:00-9:00 in our classroom.

“P” PARTY- All students who have met their AR goals for all 4 nine weeks are invited to the “P” Party at Mrs. Turner’s house on Monday, May 18th. As of today, you have ______out of 10 AR points. We have 4 more weeks to earn points. This is a great week to earn lots of points since we don’t have much homework.

Friday, April 17th- Math problem solving help after school. Send a note and bring a snack if you want to stay. Students need to be picked up at 3:30.

Saturday, April 18th- Spring Fling- 4:00-8:00. Volunteers get to park at the school and they get free bracelets for the inflatables. Check the P.T.S.A. website for more info.

Monday, April 20th- Measurement help after school until 3:30. GO TO BED EARLY!!!!! CRCT STARTS ON TUESDAY! All students need a few #2 pencils with good erasers. Eat a good breakfast. A special snack and drink will be provided every day during testing. A schedule will be coming home showing each student what to bring. No homework all week except to read

BUCKLE DOWN READING- I was very pleased with the results of the Buckle Down Reading Post Test. All of the students did very well. As always, the more students read, the better they will do. Students should be reading a variety of materials: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, recipes, plays, etc. The online CRCT tests are a great way to practice, too.

BUCKLE DOWN MATH- The math scores were not as high as I had hoped, but we have to remember that we still have two months of school left, and some of the curriculum has not been introduced yet. Many students missed questions about the distributive property because we have not gone over that yet. We will be working on that this week for the first time. We will also be working on multiplication of two and three digit numbers by one digit numbers and long division. Many of the geometry terms that we have covered were missed: perimeter, area, radius, diameter, angels, and triangles. We will review these concepts. Problem solving continues to be difficult for all students. We have learned our facts, now we need to be able to apply them to real life situations. I will be sending home a sheet today with check marks beside the items your child missed. Any extra help at home would be greatly appreciated! I can’t send home the Buckle Down workbooks, but students can bring their math books home any night to practice.

SCIENCE LAB- We get to go to the Science Lab tomorrow!

CATO FIELDTRIP- We will be going on a fieldtrip to the CATO Environmental Center on Wednesday. Please wear your blue class t-shirt. Bring a sack lunch and a drink if you didn’t order one from school. Wear tennis shoes. Listen to the weather report to see if you will need a jacket or sweatshirt. Mrs. Runyon will be our chaperone.

SPRING BREAK- Students do not have school April 6-10. Enjoy time with friends and family!

VOLUNTEER BRUNCH- April 15th- We have had so many wonderful parent volunteers this year. We truly appreciate your help. Please join us in the media center for an appreciation brunch!

SPRING FLING- The Ford Spring Fling will be held on Saturday, April 18th.

CRCT- Students will be taking the CRCT from Tuesday, April 21-Monday, April 27th. We will be asking certain people to bring in snacks, drinks, and surprises each day. More information later.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 8th from 8:00-9:00. We would like for all of our mothers to come and join us for a special celebration. If moms are not able to come, aunts, grandmothers, special friends, etc. are welcome!

REGISTRATION CARDS- Please look over the registration card, make any changes and SIGN, DATE and return.

REPORT CARDS- Report cards will be coming home on Thursday. I will go over each child’s report card with them prior to Thursday. Please sign the signature card, address the front of the envelope, and place two stamps on the envelope. That’s so I can mail home the final report card.

TARGET FIELD TRIP- Target students will be going to Fernbank on Wednesday.

ABSENT- I will not be here on Tuesday. Jill Batchelder will be my substitute.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY- Students may wear green tomorrow if they wish. Some “green” snack foods will be provided, so students do not need to bring a snack tomorrow. We will be doing some activities related to St. Patrick’s Day.

BUCKLE DOWN- We will be taking the Buckle Down Reading post test next Wednesday. The Buckle Down Math post test will be given next Friday. Please get to bed early on the nights prior to these tests. Take them seriously.

ACCELERATED READER- This is the last nine weeks. Can you believe it? Once again, students will be asked to earn 10 AR points. Please be aware that students will really only have 8 weeks to accomplish this goal because the “P” Party will be during the last week of school. Also, the media center closes before the year ends so that all books can be accounted for. Plan early!!!!!! Read, read, read! We started off the nine weeks with Pop and Read, so hopefully that helped students get off to a great start!

PIE DAY- This Friday will be PIEDAY! Everything we will be doing that day will involve pies in some way. The students have worked very hard on fractions and measurement, so this will be a fun culmination to the unit. For our day to be successful, we need donations from home. Please send in your assigned item by Friday, March 20th. My item is:
______________________________________________________. If you are unable to send in the assigned item, please let me know so that I can get it. Also, an optional challenge Pie Day sheet will be given to students on Monday. Try to complete the sheet by Friday. Students with correct answers will receive a special prize.

PARENT HELPERS- We are so thankful for all of our parent helpers. Please remember that if you are on the calendar for a MONDAY, you are our Mystery Reader from 11:30-11:55. You can bring books of your own, or you can read our class book.

BOOK FAIR- Please stop by the Media Center this week and check out all of the new books offered at the Book Fair. It is open in the mornings before school and after school each day. We went for our preview today.

EARLY RELEASE- Students will be dismissed at 12:20 tomorrow for Early Release Day.

TALENT SHOW- We are very proud of Piper Runyon, Madison Yokley, ZuZu Nemeth, and Haley Waddell for representing our class in the school talent show last Thursday at Harrison High School.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND- Noah Rushin and Haley Waddell did a great job at the O.M tournament this past weekend.

ART REWARD- Hopefully everyone remembered to wear their pajamas today for the art reward

TERRIFIC KID- Congratulations to Noah Rushin for earning the Terrific Kid Award for tolerance.

CLASSROOM DONATIONS- Thank you for all of the tissue and wipe donations. We have also gotten more treats for our goodie drawers!

BANANA SPLITS- Many thanks to everyone who sent in items for our banana splits. I heard they were very good!

PERFORMING ARTS- All third grade students will be going to an off campus performance on Wednesday. We will eat lunch in the classroom before we leave for the performance at 10:45.

ACCELERATED READER- We are in the seventh week of the nine week period. Time is running out…work hard to meet the 10 point AR goal. If students are reading at least 15 minutes for a minimum of 4 out of 7 nights a week, the 10 point goal should be easy to achieve. As of today, you have _____out of 10 points. Congratulations to the students who have already met their goal and who continue to accumulate points. Reading is just like anything else… The more you practice, the better you get at it. Keep practicing

MYSTERY BOOK REPORTS- Students were asked to write a summary of their mystery book and to complete a 3-D picture to go with it. A grade of an E or G on this assignment was very good because students had to do all of the work by themselves. An orange post-it note was attached to each project with comments, misspelled words, and questions. At this point in the year, all students should know to underline book titles, indent the beginning of a paragraph and to capitalize names of people and places. They should also know on a final project to proofread for spelling, punctuation, etc. before turning it in. Neat handwriting is a must!

IN SCHOOL FIELD TRIP- The ladies from Cobb County Parks and Recreation will be coming to school tomorrow to work with the students from 8:20-9:25

SCIENCE LAB- Students will be going to the Science Lab on Wednesday this week.

CURRICULUM NIGHT- Please join us for Curriculum Night this Thursday. Lasagna dinner will be served from 6:00-6:45. Special interactive events will be set up from 6:45-8:00.

VALENTINE’S DAY- Students will be allowed to exchange Valentines first thing in the morning on Friday the 13th. If they choose to participate, they need to include everyone in our class. A class list was sent home last week. Students need to make some type of container to hold their Valentines. Please don’t send the containers in until Friday

TEACHER WORKDAY- Students do not have school on Monday, February 16th.

MULTIPLICATION REWARD- I promised the students that we would have a big celebration once everyone passed all of their multiplication tables. Mission accomplished!!! We will be making banana splits and watching a special movie on Friday. Please look for an e-mail asking for items needed for the banana splits.

ART REWARD- Our class won a reward from the art teacher. They are supposed to wear their pajamas and slippers on Tuesday, February 17th. She will be showing them a movie during art class that day.

CLASSROOM NEEDS- We are running low on tissues and Clorox wipes in the classroom. We could also use some more goodies in our goodie drawer. We would appreciate anything you can donate. Many thanks to Katie Nelson for numerous donations!

TELLUS MUSEUM FIELD TRIP- The two parents who were chosen to chaperone the field trip are Kay Appelgate and Tracey Byrne.

CLASSROOM AND LUNCHROOM BEHAVIOR- I am very fortunate to work with such a great group of students, however, some name calling and other undesirable behaviors have been creeping up lately. Our bonus words this week reflect what we need to be working on. Please go over these with your child.

BRAGGING MOM- I have to brag on my son Kevin. He came in first place in Technology Literacy Challenge and first place in Project Programming at the North Metro Regional Tech Fair this past weekend.
