NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER MAY 7-11 TEACHER APPRECIATION- Wow! What a way to get a week started! I was treated to lunch and dessert and the students made a very neat quilt for me. Thanks so much! MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- We are excited about having our mothers come THIS Friday from 10:00-11:00 in our classroom. We have some special treats waiting for you! You are welcome to stay and go to lunch with us afterwards. TAYLOR LANCE- ( I misspelled Taylor’s last name last week…it is Lance, not Nance) We have been so fortunate to have a fantastic RISE student this year. We would like to have a graduation/thank you party for Taylor NEXT Friday, May 18th. Many thanks to all of the families who have already sent in a graduation/thank you present for Taylor. She will be going to Boise State. Her dorm colors will be brown and plum. I would like to have banana splits to eat that day. I will buy the ice cream. I will need other people to sign up for other items. I will send out an e-mail. Please hit “reply all” when you respond so we know what has been covered. Thank you so much for your help with this! We couldn’t have asked for a better helper! FIELD DAY- We will be having Field Day on Tuesday, May 15th. The PE department could still use some volunteers. Students should wear ORANGE shirts that day so our class can be spotted easily. COUPON BOOKS- Don’t forget about your coupon books. They expire at the end of the year. We only have 3 weeks left! ACCELERATED READER/ “P” PARTY- I am getting very excited about the “P” Party! Almost everyone has met their goal already!!!! Mark your calendars for Monday, May 21 from 4:00-6:00. Directions to my house will be sent out closer to party time!!! EARLY DISMISSAL- Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Wednesday, May 23rd and Thursday, May 24th. SUBJECT MATTER SPELLING- The words this week have the long a sound. An assessment will be given on Friday. We will also be taking our final Spelling Inventory on Wednesday. ENGLISH- Review parts of speech/ Discuss using the pronouns I and me/Write a letter READING- Practice oral reading/ Finish DRA’s/ Work on context clues/ Read “Amber Brown is Not a Crayon” WRITING- Finish lower case cursive letters/ Write an advice column MATH- Review elapsed time/Fish tests every day/ Review for Benchmark Test/ Practice Book pages on various topics/Play Twenty-One JEOPARDY- We will be writing Jeopardy cards all week in every subject. We will start playing Jeopardy next week as a fun way to review all that we have studied and learned this year!

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER APRIL 30-MAY 4 TAYLOR NANCE- We have had a wonderful RISE student all year. Taylor has come in every day and helped us in the classroom. We have been very fortunate to have such a compassionate, hardworking helper. We are going to have a SURPRISE shower for her next week. If you would like to buy a graduation gift for Taylor, please wrap it, attach a card or letter, and send it to school. Taylor will be going to Boise State in July! Let’s show her our appreciation for all that she has done for us this year. Her dorm colors are brown and plum. EVENING IN THE GARDEN- Please join us tomorrow night for our annual Evening in the Garden. The festivities start at 5:30. Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy the music and artwork. MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- Calling all moms! Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 11th from 12:00-1:00 in our classroom. We will be having a special celebration for all of our wonderful mothers! Please write in the agenda if you are able to come ABSENT- I will be at the Leadership Retreat this Friday. Karen Jones will be my sub. ACCELERATED READER- Please encourage your child to meet the 10 point AR minimum for this nine weeks. We only have 3 weeks left to earn points. All students need at least 80% comprehension. The “P” Party will be on Monday, May 21st at my house for all students who have met their goal EVERY nine weeks. FIELD DAY- The third grade Field Day is Tuesday, May 15th. If you would like to volunteer, please notify Mr. Norris. SUBJECT MATTER SPELLING- We are discussing how to add –ed and –ing to the end of words and how to divide them into syllables. An assessment will be given on Friday. ENGLISH- Review the different parts of speech/ Complete GUMS pages READING- Context clues will be our main focus this week/ Read TFK/ Complete comprehension sheets on Paul Revere and Cezar Chavez MATH- The Fish Tests are back! We will be taking Fish Tests for the next three weeks./ A different assessment will be given each day on *2 and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication, *long division, *problem solving and *place value. SOCIAL STUDIES- We will be reading various Georgia News Weekly newspapers this week to review topics we’ve covered-World Geography, Government Services, and Landforms

NEWSLETTER Mrs. Turner APRIL 23-27 TESTING- We only have one more day of testing. The social studies section will be given tomorrow. Students should study their flipcharts and the materials in their social studies folder tonight. Students should bring their own snacks tomorrow. Many thanks to everyone who has sent in snack items. The students (and teachers) have really enjoyed them! ZUMBA-Mrs. Cyr and Mrs. Mattingly will be teaching Zumba classes on Wednesday, April 25th. The cost is $5 and 100% of the proceeds go to Relay for Life. OUR CLASS will be in a commercial advertising Zumba…how cool! If you don’t have a form to fill out, just send in a note with $5. Students and adults will be in separate rooms. VOLUNTEER TEA- Many thanks to all of the parents who have worked in the classroom with students, been our Mystery Reader, or have sent in items for various events. You are truly appreciated! Please join us this Thursday any time between 8:30 and 10:00 for some homemade goodies in the Media Center. CRAZY SOCK DAY-Students can pay $1 to support Relay for Life. Wear your crazy socks on Friday to “Sock Out Cancer”!!!! EVENING IN THE GARDEN- Pre-order forms for food are due tomorrow, April 24th. I am sending an e-mail with the food order attachment later today. Third grade students will be performing at 6:15 on Tuesday, May 1st. Students should wear SOLID blue, orange, green, purple, gray, or yellow shirts with solid color shorts or pants. All shirts should be tucked in. Please wear closed toe shoes. Please allow plenty of time for parking!!! Please write in the agenda if you plan on participating in Evening in the Garden. MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION- Our class will be having a Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday, May 11th from 12:00-1:00 in our classroom. Mothers are welcome to eat lunch with their children prior to the celebration. Please mark your calendars for this very special day. FIELD DAY- Third grade will have their field day on Tuesday, May 15th. Parent volunteers are needed. Please contact Mr. Norris if you would like to help that day. ACCELERATED READER- All students need 10 AR points by Friday, May 18th. Students also need to have at least 80% comprehension. Some students are trying to read books that are too far above their level and it is making their comprehension level come down. Be wise when you choose books. The “P” Party will be on Monday, May 21st from 4-6 at Mrs. Turner’s house for everyone who meets their AR goal EVERY nine weeks. SUBJECT MATTER SPELLING- We will have a spelling assessment this Friday over the words that were introduced LAST week. We will start having spelling homework again tomorrow night. ENGLISH- We will be writing spring poems/ Grammar Rock READING- I will start working on DRA’s for all of the students./Time For Kids-comprehension questions MATH- Continue working on the distributive property/ Multiplication and division with multiple digits SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES- Continue covering various topics in our standards

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER APRIL 16-20
CRCT- The CRCT starts this week. The Reading Test will be given on Wednesday, Language Arts on Thursday, Math on Friday, Science the following Monday, and Social Studies on Tuesday. A special snack schedule was sent home on Friday. Please mark your date and item on the calendar. As always, students need to get to bed early, eat a good breakfast, and bring several number 2 pencils with good erasers. Students should have a good book to read when they finish the test.
ZUMBA FOR RELAY FOR LIFE- On April 25, from 2:45-3:45, a zumba class will be offered for $5. Mrs. Cyr will be teaching the adults in the gym and Kelly Mattingly will be teaching the children in room 401. All proceeds will benefit Relay For Life. Come on out and get some exercise and support a great cause!
$1,000 FOR FORD- 11 Alive is sponsoring a contest for schools. All you have to do is go on line and nominate Ford Elementary ONCE A DAY, and we could earn $1,000 for our school and a live spot on 11Alive News Today the week of April 30th. HOMEWORK- Students will have minimal homework this week and next week due to testing. Reading logs will still need to be filled out both weeks.
ACCELERATED READER- These next two weeks are a great time to earn AR points because students will not be having much homework. All students need at least 10 AR points with 80% comprehension by Friday, May 18th.
SUBJECT MATTER- Ask your child various CRCT Review questions below!!!!!!
SPELLING- We will be working on Cloze Review #30 this week AND next week. We will not take a test over this group of words until NEXT Friday./ We will be reviewing all of the different ways to make words plural. Ask your child to tell you all of the ways to make words plural with an example of each. (add s=cat/cats, add es=bush/bushes “If you hear es, you add es.”, consonant before y change the y to I and add es=butterfly/butterflies, vowel before y just add s=monkey/monkeys, change the word-mouse/ mice, keep the word the same=deer/deer, if a word ends with f or fe change the f or fe to v and add es=knife/knives
ENGLISH- All of the parts of speech will be reviewed this week. Ask your child to “show” you the parts of a friendly letter and tell what is included in each part. (heading, greeting, body, closing, signature) We will continue to work on our cursive handwriting.
READING- We will be reading and discussing Time For Kids and noticing the types of questions and what we should look for in the passages to locate the correct answers./ All students should have a couple of books AT SCHOOL to read during testing./ Review Author’s Purpose- Ask your child to tell you the three main reasons why authors write (PIE – persuade, inform, entertain)./ Use Buckle Down to review various reading topics.
MATH- We are learning about the distributive property of multiplication and reviewing other properties. Review various math topics. Study all of your geometry vocabulary. Please ask your child to tell you and to act out how to find area and perimeter. (perimeter=add all of the sides or count around the outside edges/ area=length x width or count the squares. SQUARE should be in the area answer.)
SCIENCE- We are using our science workbooks to review and practice the various topics we have studied this year. The students have done a great job working in groups to get the correct answers for the reviews. Students are encouraged to bring the workbook home each night and review the CRCT practice pages. Please ask your child to tell you the three kinds of rocks. (Igneous, sedimentary, and meta
morphic)
SOCIAL STUDIES- We have studied 9 people who have had an effect on the United States. All of the students have a flip chart with information on each person. Students are encouraged to take home the flip chart to review the various people. Ask your child to tell you the 4 types of resources and an example of each (natural resource-wood, human resource-fireman, capital resource- tow truck, entrepreneur-someone who takes a risk to start a new business)
WRITE IN THE AGENDA HOW YOUR CHILD DID ON THE QUESTIONS= Fantastic, Very Good, Fair, or Poor- Is there any particular topic he/she needs to review?

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER APRIL 9-13
WELCOME BACK- It was so nice to see all of the tan, smiling faces this morning. I hope everyone enjoyed time with friends and family.
CATO FIELD TRIP- We will be going to the CATO Environmental Center tomorrow. Students need to bring a sack lunch and drink. They should wear jeans, tennis shoes, and a light jacket. We will be outside most of the day.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST- Our students saw a preview of Allatoona’s Beauty and the Beast before spring break. The costumes were amazing! The actual performances are this week at Allatoona High School in the theatre. The cost is $8 for children 10 and under and $10 for everyone else. The times are: Thursday, April 12th at 7:00, Friday, April 13th at 7:00, & Saturday, April 14th at 2:00 and 7:00. (p.s. Kevin is playing in the orchestra)
FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM DAY- Please help the Relay for Life team by donating $1.00 on Friday to wear your favorite sports team shirt.
CRCT- The CRCT will start NEXT Wednesday, April 18th. The first test will be Reading, followed by Language Arts, Math, Science, then Social Studies. A special snack schedule will be sent home at the end of this week.
VOLUNTEER TEA- We have been so fortunate to have wonderful parent volunteers this year. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, April 26th from 8:00-10:00. The staff would like to show our appreciation by having you stop in for some homemade goodies in the Media Center.
EVENING IN THE GARDEN- Families always enjoy the special evening of food and music. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 1st from 5:30-7:30.
****MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR A SPECIAL MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION-We would like to invite all of our mothers to a special Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday, May 11th from 11:45-12:45. SOCIAL STUDIES- We will continue taking notes on famous Americans
SCIENCE- Pollution Solutions will be our topic at CATO/ We will be reviewing topics in our Science workbooks

NEWSLETTER MRS.T URNER MARCH 26-30
REGISTRATION FORM- The students are bringing home their registration cards today. Please look over all of the information and make any changes or add any missing information. Please SIGN THE BACK!!!! Return the form ASAP.
MEDIA CENTER- We will be checking out new library books tomorrow. Bring any library books that need to be renewed or returned.
ACCELERATED READER- Please remember that all students need 10 AR points this nine weeks. We will only have 7 weeks to actually meet the goal. Get started early! Do you know how many points you have so far?
ACCELERATED READER REWARD/ PJ DAY and POP and READ- All students met their AR goal for the third nine weeks. They voted to have PJ Day and POP and READ this Friday. We will be having some special Easter snacks, drinks, etc. so the students don’t have to worry about bringing snacks or drinks for Pop and Read. Just bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, etc and BOOKS!!!!!
HAT DAY- Students may donate $1.00 to Relay for Life on Friday and wear their favorite hat.
SPRING BREAK-Students do not have school April 2-6. Enjoy time with your friends and family.
CRCT- Please don’t plan any appointments from Wednesday, April 18- Tuesday, April 24. We will be taking the test every morning during that time. A special snack schedule will be sent home when we get back from Spring Break.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- We will be working on dividing words into syllables this week. An assessment will be given on Friday.
ENGLISH- We will be reviewing lots of previously covered material this week: common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, possessive nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs, guide words, and multiple meanings. Students will be working on a multiple meanings packet throughout the week.
READING- Author’s purpose, genres, and poetry will be our focus this week. We will also read Time for Kids./ Pop and Read on Friday-get started early earning your 10 AR points!
WRITING- We are continuing to learn the cursive letters. Remember…don’t try to write in cursive until we learn the proper formation of each of the letters. It’s hard to break bad habits.
MATH- This week we will be using the Buckle Down books to review math skills. Each day will be a certain concentration: measurement, area & perimeter, problem solving, and long division. Each night we will review multi-digit multiplication in our practice books. What is the answer to a division problem called? Write the answer in the agenda.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Another landform assessment will be given this Friday. Students will be given the same sheet they used to label their landform maps. I will point to various places on a map up front, and they will have to place the correct number beside the correct landform on a piece of paper./ We will also be reading and learning about Cesar Chavez, Thurgood Marshall, and Lyndon B. Johnson.
